Macon Pride Week kicks of today and will run until Oct. 2 with a diverse array of events happening each day, from a multi-faith worship service to a drag show and, of course, the “Pride in the Park” festival.

Scott Mitchell, the president of Macon Pride, said it first began in 2019 when he and his co-founders “saw a need.” Before that, Mitchell said the last Pride celebration was at least 20 years ago.

“There was a group of friends that knew we needed to do something to show visibility here in Middle Georgia,” he said. “We got together, and we just did a one-day event in Third Street Park, it was an afternoon, for four hours. It poured down rain, people didn’t leave, they stayed and danced in the rain, and it was just a great celebration. And we knew then that we were onto something.”

This year, Mitchell and the other members of the Macon Pride executive board are being sure to leave no stone unturned to make this their best year yet.

One event, the “House Party” drag show Friday at the Hargray Capitol Theatre, will feature a finalist from the most recent season of popular reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, Angeria Paris VanMicheals.

“I’m super excited about that,” Mitchell said. “That’ll be a really, really good event.”

However, Mitchell said he is just as excited for the rest of the week.

“It’s some of the greatest work of my life,” he said. “It helps me live in a community that I’m proud of, that I know is filled with people who love and support me and people who look like me, people who are like me.”
