Incumbent Lester Miller has defeated his opponent Shekita Maxwell in the race for Macon-Bibb County mayor, according to unofficial results from the Georgia secretary of state.

Miller will begin his second term as mayor on Jan. 1 after getting more than 86% of the vote as of Wednesday morning.

Miller is a graduate of Mercer University and Mercer University School of Law. He won the race for mayor in 2020 and prior to that lost in a bid for superior court judge. Miller also ran for the Bibb County School Board, where he served two terms.

In his first term as mayor, Miller has worked on projects such as the “Blight Fight” initiative and the Macon Violence Prevention Program.

Miller said in a previous interview with The Telegraph that if reelected, he plans to focus on improving public safety and expanding economic development in his second term. He also plans to get the Ocmulgee River area recognized as Georgia’s first national park, promote tourism and improve infrastructure.

“I will continue prioritizing public safety, continuing full funding for law enforcement and providing additional funding for upgraded facilities, training for first responders and to attract new and retain veteran public safety employees,” he said. “I will continue the successful Macon Violence Prevention program, focusing funding on the successful interventions that address the root causes of violent crime, including accessible and effective mental health services.”
