This new Macon-Bibb deputy fire chief is following in his grandfather’s footsteps.

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department appointed a new deputy chief in a ceremony held on Wednesday.

Ronald Smith, Jr. was appointed the new position by fire Chief Shane Edwards and pinned by his wife at the ceremony.

“I think it should be known that Ron Smith’s grandfather, Chief Wendell Harvey, was the one who sat with me 35 years ago and was telling me y’all would be the future leaders,” said Edwards. “He was a chief here back then and he was truly making a difference here in this organization. And just to see Chief Smith follow in those footsteps, becoming a young leader, a young chief - that right there speaks volumes about this family, about the commitment and dedication that this family has to the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department.”

Smith, a native of Macon, graduated from Windsor Academy in 2002. He became a third-generation firefighter for the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department on Nov. 3, 2003.

As deputy chief, Smith will oversee the numerous administrative divisions in the department, including fire prevention, training, fleet management, arson investigation and special operations, according to officials.

“We’re thankful for Chief Smith’s commitment and dedication to the department and our community, and we’re all looking forward to his leadership,” said Edwards.
