I’m stuffing my face with chocolate this Easter – to annoy the NHS luvvies

Where has Easter gone? One of our longest holiday breaks of the year and the most important religious week of the year. It is a time of joy, new life, spring flowers and chocolate excess. The weather may be awful, and the children not quite as excited by the Easter Bunny as they are by Father Christmas, but nonetheless, it matters.

It would be nice at this time of the year to see some Easter decorations up in our big cities, as indeed many of us will decorate our own homes. But not a bit of it. The central London displays say ‘Happy Ramadan’. No one today even bothers to put up a weak defence of our Christian culture and identity, least of all the useless Archbishop of Canterbury.

As a child, Easter has chocolate at its very centre. Some of us of more advanced years still enjoy that same bit of excess during this time of year. But even this little pleasure is now to be driven out by the modern-day Puritan control freaks.

Not content with creating a new black market in cigarettes for the young, or being told by the World Health Organisation that there is now no safe limit for alcohol consumption, they want to ruin everyone’s Easter, too.

Dr Andrew Kelso, Medical Director at NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board, is a case in point. In grave tones, he warns us that a whole Easter egg contains three quarters of our recommended daily calorie intake and tells us to “resist the urge to eat a whole egg in one go”.

I simply say: Go away, Dr Kelso!

I don’t care, and I loathe your patronising tone. It’s Easter, and let’s enjoy it. I have not yet decided whether to go to church on Sunday morning to get a Marxist lecture from my Church of England Vicar, but I have decided to stuff myself with chocolate, even if it spoils lunch – and upsets all the right people.
