Love Beyond Volunteering: The Salvation Army celebrates National Volunteer Month

Apr. 17—The Salvation Army is calling on individuals in Midland and Odessa to embrace the spirit of giving back during April, which is National Volunteer Month.

Love Beyond Volunteering serves as a reminder of the profound impact your gift of time and service can have on the lives of those in need. Volunteering at The Salvation Army is not simply about hours worked or tasks completed. It is about the lasting difference made in the lives of individuals, families and communities.

While most visible at Christmastime, The Salvation Army is reminding the community that volunteering is not limited to the Red Kettle Campaign or the Angel Tree program during the holidays. They provide numerous year-round opportunities for people to get involved. From working in food pantries, kitchens or the Thrift Store, or supporting after-school character building programs for children, there are countless ways to make a difference.

"Volunteers are the Army behind the Army, and we simply couldn't accomplish all that we do without the support of committed and passionate volunteers," Capt. Robert Coriston with The Salvation Army of Midland/Odessa said in a news release. "A famous quote by Elizabeth Andrews says, 'Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.' If you have a heart for service and for those in need, we have a volunteer opportunity for you! During National Volunteer Month we want to challenge our community to consider the impact their gift of time can have on those served by The Salvation Army."

Jim was looking for a place to volunteer and called The Salvation Army. He began helping to serve breakfast and lunch to those staying in the shelter. "I never expected to feel the way I did while helping others. Volunteering and serving at The Salvation Army really fills my heart with joy," said Jim. He now volunteers regularly, not only serving meals to hungry clients, but also cleaning up in the dining room and kitchen and preparing for the next meal service.

While working in the kitchen one day, Jim noticed a truck arrive and numerous boxes being unloaded into the kitchen. He asked about the delivery and learned about The Salvation Army's food pantry program. "I had no idea that people could come and receive a food box to help get them through the week," said Jim. "I now help put together those food boxes too and it is such a blessing to know that our neighbors outside the shelter can access assistance from The Salvation Army. I am blessed to play even a small part in that help."

Jim didn't know much about The Salvation Army before he began volunteering. "I knew they helped at Christmas and rang the little bells! Since then, I've learned it is such a positive organization. I've seen people come here with serious problems, but the staff works with them and over time it's great to see them turn their lives around."
