Port City Life Newsletter: Wilmington events compete with hoops for attention this weekend

March in North Carolina means college basketball.

As I write this on Thursday morning, I'm trying to figure out a way that I can watch at least some of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament this afternoon, most importantly the game in which my beloved University of North Carolina Tar Heels take on the Florida State Seminoles to determine who gets to play in the tourney semifinals tomorrow.

Everybody's rooting for somebody, it seems, whether it's UNC, Duke, North Carolina State, Wake Forest (all of whom are still alive as I type this) or some out-of-state team.

Next week we'll up the ante when the NCAA Tournament begins.

Anyway, I write this because I want you all to know that, no matter what I say or do, I'm probably thinking about basketball until further notice.

THAT SAID, there are some notable events coming down the pike in Wilmington area this weekend, so let's get to it.

St. Patrick's Day is on Sunday, so not surprisingly there's a ton of stuff going on in Wilmington.

The Wilmington St. Patrick's Day Parade is downtown on Saturday, and a whole bunch of places will be celebrating afterwards with live music, including Waterline Brewing, Rooster & The Crow and (on Castle Street) Fermental.

There's also a nice mix of comedy, concerts and family events this weekend. Get the full list below.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

Lots of openings and closings in the bar and restaurant world this week.

No fewer than eight new bars and restaurants will be coming to Carolina Beach in the coming weeks and months, and a popular Outer Banks seafood restaurant is planning a second location in Brunswick County.

It's not all good news, though, because a well-known Wilmington brewery with two locations will be closing both of them this week.

The Oscars, which were held last Sunday, are generally touted as bringing an end to awards season. But not so fast!

Wilmington's awards show to end all awards shows rolls around for the 11th time on Wednesday, March 20, when the Wilmington Theater Awards return to Thalian Hall downtown. Tickets are $25, and are on sale now.

Good news for folks who frequent the Wilmington Riverwalk downtown, which should be seeing some enhancements soon.

Plus, a Wilmington company has filed for bankruptcy, and area beaches are preparing to crack down on loud visitors by increasing fines for noise violations.
