Louisville football entered Holiday Bowl with better record but USC proved more talented

Coverage during the game:

SAN DIEGO — The Holiday Bowl will offer Louisville a glimpse into the future.

With leading rusher Jawhar Jordan out, Cardinals coach Jeff Brohm said the team needs to help backup running back Maurice Turner have a good game against Southern California because Turner "is going to be a big piece of our team next year."

Turner played in all 13 games this season, alternating turns in the backfield with Jordan and Isaac Guerendo, whose college career will come to an end against the Trojans.

Turner, who enters the Holiday Bowl with 251 yards and a touchdown on 51 carriers, last postseason showed he can capitalize on an opportunity. When the Cardinals were down to Jordan and Turner as the lone two running backs against Cincinnati in the Fenway Bowl, Turner led the team's rushing effort with a career-high 160 yards on 31 carries in the 24-7 victory.

USC 35, LOUISVILLE 28 (4Q, 12:51)

Isaac Guerendo walked into the end zone on a 2-yard run for his third touchdown in the game. Guerendo has rushed for 153 yards, by comparison, the Trojans have gained just 24 yards on the ground.

USC 35, LOUISVILLE 21 (3Q, 4:51)

USC quarterback Miller Moss is now up to five touchdowns, a new Holiday Bowl record, after floating a 12-yard pass to receiver Ja'Kobi Lane. The Trojans took 4:47 off the clock during the 11-play, 53-yard drive.

USC 28, LOUISVILLE 21 (3Q, 9:43)

Isaac Guerendo scored his second touchdown of the night on a one-yard run for 107 rushing yards in the game. The Cardinals' six-play, 39-yard scoring drive was set up by cornerback Quincy Riley's 61-yard interception return, which is a Holiday Bowl record.

USC 28, LOUISVILLE 14 (0:19 2Q)

The Trojans quickly answered U of L's score needing just five plays to cover 75 yards. Moss Miller essentially threw a pass up for grabs that was hauled in by JaKobi Lane for a 31-yard touchdown. Miller's four touchdown passes have already tied the Holiday Bowl record.

USC 21, LOUISVILLE 14 (1:56 2Q)

The Cards put together a scoring drive they absolutely needed. Powered by the running of Isaac Guerendo, who accounted for 49 yards of the 73-yard drive, the Cards finished off the drive with Evan Conley's 9-yard touchdown run.

USC 21, LOUISVILLE 7 (6:30 2Q)

Kyron Hudson blocked a punt to set USC up at the U of L 18. Then he was on the receiving end of a 9-yard touchdown pass from Miller Moss. The Trojans have only outgained the Cards 166 to 120 on offense, but have a two-touchdown advantage thanks to two scoring drives of less than 20 yards.

USC 14, LOUISVILLE 7 (8:07 2Q)

Tahj Washington caught his second touchdown pass of the game, beating Storm Duck for a 29-yard score to cap off an 80-yard drive.

Jack Plummer injury

Louisville quarterback Jack Plummer suffered a dislocated finger on his throwing hand and sat out for one play. Brock Domann entered the game in his place at the 12:01 mark of the second quarter.

USC 7, LOUISVILLE 7 (4:25 1Q)

USC capitalized after a Jack Plummer fumble set them up at the U of L 19. Receiver Tahj Washington caught a short pass, juked cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr., and ran 17 yards for a touchdown.

MISSED FG

USC failed to capitalize on a 40-yard reception by Makai Lemon when receiver Duce Robinson dropped a pass on third down and Denis Lynch missed a 39-yard field goal wide right.

LOUISVILLE 7, USC 0 (8:37 1Q)

The Cards couldn't have opened the game with a better two series. On defense, they held the Trojans to a three-and-out. Then on their first possession, they drove 71 yards in 10 plays and running back Isaac Guerendo capped it off with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
