“Too many Americans are paying for the price of inaction with their lives.

“When will Republicans in Congress act to protect our communities?”

The five victims killed in Monday’s attack have been identified as Josh Barrick, 40; Tommy Elliott, 63; Jim Tutt, 64; Juliana Farmer, 57; and Deanna Eckert, 57.

The first four victims were pronounced dead on the scene while Eckert succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

That friend was Elliott. Mr Beshear said Elliott helped him in his early career and provided him life advice throughout their friendship.

“He was one of the people I talked to most in the world, and very rarely were we talking about my job,” the governor said.

He revealed that he banked with Old National Bank and formerly had an office in the building during his campaign for the attorney general’s office.

Another eight victims were hospitalised including two police officers who were shot by the gunman after responding to the scene.

One of those officers – Louisville Metro Police Department Officer Nickolas Wilt – was shot in the head. The officer, who was sworn in just days earlier, is in critical but stable condition following surgery.

According to a LinkedIn account in his name, Sturgeon had worked at the bank as a syndications associate and portfolio banker.

The motive for the attack remains unclear but the gunman is said to have left behind ominous warnings about his deadly plans for his family and friends to find.

Police dispatch audio, released by Broadcastify, captures the minute-by-minute police response to Monday’s horror attack

In the audio, the dispatcher is heard relaying to law enforcement officials on the scene that Sturgeon had called a friend before the attack and left a chilling voicemail saying he felt “suicidal” and planned to “kill everyone at the bank”.

Sturgeon had also written a note to his parents and a friend outlining his plans to open fire in the bank, a law enforcement source told CNN.

His family lives in Greenville, Indiana, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

He graduated from Floyd Central High School, where he played basketball and his father was the coach. He went on to attend the University of Alabama before moving to Louisville.

Several people have spoken out in shock that Sturgeon was behind the mass shooting.

Ms Buchheit-Sims said she didn’t personally work with him but knew of him because Sturgeon’s father coaches her son’s high school basketball team.

She said she had never seen any signs of violence or threats from the 25-year-old.

“His temperament is pretty low-key. I’ve never seen the kid get angry or upset about anything in public. He was pretty much just relaxed,” she said, describing him as “extremely intelligent” and with “just kind of a monotone personality”.

“I’m just as much in shock and disbelief and was in disbelief as I watched it unravel.”

Sturgeon was livestreaming his shooting rampage online.

Over in Nashville...

13:20 , Rachel Sharp

City leaders in Nashville voted unanimously on Monday to reinstate former state representative Justin Jones, a Democratic lawmaker who was expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday for joining in an anti-gun violence protest on the statehouse floor.

Mr Jones and his colleague Justin Pearson, both of whom are Black, were stripped of their House seats last weeks, following an effort from state Republicans that critics called an “unprecedented” abuse of power in Tennessee history.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters on Monday, Mr Jones decried the state’s “plantation politics” and criticised Tennessee’s Republican Speaker of the House, Cameron Sexton.

The pair were ousted from their roles after they joined protests against gun violence after six were killed in a school shooting in the city last week.

The state also lacks a number of gun control measures considered standard for reducing gun violence, including safe storage, background checks for hand guns, assault weapons bans, and “red flag” laws allowing courts to seize guns from dangerous people, according to Everytown.

Media reports suggest that Connor Sturgeon had a long history of posting about politics, sports, and video games on social media.

The Daily Beast says that a Twitter account in his name, now removed, had posted in support of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 and criticised police violence.

A Reddit account by the same handle, also now removed, likewise posted political memes mocking Donald Trump and his supporters, as well as Fox News, according to Heavy.com.

'My self-esteem has long been a problem for me'

06:04 , Io Dodds

Connor Sturgeon wrote that he had struggled with "self-esteem" and was a "late bloomer" in a university essay, The Daily Beast reports.

"My self-esteem has long been a problem for me," the shooter appears to have written in an essay uploaded to CourseHero in 2018.

"As a late bloomer in middle and high school, I struggled to a certain extent to fit in, and this has given me a somewhat negative self-image that persists today. Making friends has never been especially easy, so I have more experience than most in operating alone.

"Furthermore, college has introduced a whole new atmosphere and new challenges, so it is easy to feel like I am not doing as well as I should be.

"This semester, however, I think I have begun to mature socially and am beginning to see improvement in this area. I have found that taking time out to take stock of how I feel and what I can do to feel better has helped me be more social and in turn feel better about myself."

'I could burn this whole place down'

An Instagram account that may have belonged to Connor Sturgeon posted ominous messages in the hours leading up to the shooting, according to Louisville broadcaster WDRB.

That account has now been removed, and The Independent has not been able to verify the it actually belonged to Sturgeon.

But screenshots posted by the TV news station showed memes featuring two movie quotes: "I could burn this whole place down" and "I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strength to do it".

Another message, with no picture, simply says: "They won't listen to words or protests. Let's see if they hear this."

More details emerge about Connor Sturgeon

What do we know so far about shooter Connor Sturgeon?

According to his LinkedIn page, which has now been deleted, he was a portfolio banker with the Old National Bank in Louisville, and had a master's degree in finance from the University of Alabama.

He said that he had graduated in 2020, interned at the bank in 2018 to 2020, and started working at the bank in June 2021.

Before that, he went to Floyd Central High School in southern Indiana, where he was named "Mr Floyd Central" in 2016 and played on the basketball team, known as the Highlanders.

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, that team was coached by Sturgeon's own father Todd Sturgeon, who was persuaded to join the team after a prolonged period of underwhelming performance due to his 6'4 son's participation.

"We have a big challenge ahead, but we’re not trying to climb Everest here," Todd Sturgeon told the newspaper in 2014. "We have to get basketball going the right way, and I think we can do it. There’s obviously some work to be done...

"My wife said 'you were always looking for a sign, whether it was the right time to do something, and this time it was a sledgehammer to the head'. It’s the opportunities to coach my own sons. I have a special interest in getting the program turned around."

How the shooting unfolded, according to police radio

01:11 , Io Dodds

The police scanner audio gives us a detailed timeline of the 30 minutes after Connor Sturgeon opened fire at the Old National Bank in Louisville.

Not long after 8:30am on Monday morning, a dispatcher announces that shots have been fired and that an officer is down on the steps outside the bank entrance.

With gunshots ringing out in the background, and the SWAT team still en route, other officers report that they are pinned down and cannot approach the bank from the front for fear of being ambushed.

Nevertheless, two officers with a shield try to reach their downed comrade from another angle while the gunman continues firing at police from the upper windows. They can't quite see where the shooter is through the glass.

Shortly afterwards, someone yells: "Get a f***ing EMS here now! He's got a [wound] to the head. Get a f***ing EMS right now!"

The injured officer has since been identified as 26-year-old Nickolas Wilt, who had graduated from police academy on March 31 and is now in a critical condition in hospital.

Other officers attempt to enter the bank via the rear. About 6-7 minutes after the first report of shots fired, someone says that the shooter is down, and the police begin to set up a perimeter, establish a command post in a nearby parking lot, and search the building.

About 12 minute after the first shots, officers in a conference room on the first floor make an urgent plea for medics to help two civilians who have been shot. Other officers find an employee in a bathroom who has been shot in the leg.

By half an hour after the first shots, the building is secure.

The radio clips were obtained via Broadcastify and first reported by Heavy.com.

“Once again, our nation is in mourning after a senseless act of gun violence. Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in the tragic shooting in Louisville, and for the survivors who will carry grief and trauma for the rest of their lives. We are grateful to the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department officers who quickly and courageously stepped into the line of fire to save others.

How many more Americans must die before Republicans in Congress will act to protect our communities? It’s long past time that we require safe storage of firearms. Require background checks for all gun sales. Eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability. We can and must do these things now.

A strong majority of Americans want lawmakers to act on commonsense gun safety reforms. Instead, from Florida to North Carolina to the U.S. House of Representatives, we’ve watched Republican officials double down on dangerous bills that make our schools, places of worship, and communities less safe. It’s unconscionable, it’s reckless, and too many Americans are paying with their lives.”
