Lopez vs. Lopez Renewed for Season 3

The battle of Lopez vs. Lopez will continue: NBC has renewed the sitcom starring George Lopez and Mayan Lopez for a third season, TVLine has learned. The network has also handed a series order to the Reba McEntire sitcom Happy’s Place.

Season-to-date, Lopez vs. Lopez is averaging 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), nearly right on par with its Season 1 numbers. Out of the three sitcoms that NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks last behind the already-renewed Night Court‘s second season (3.8 mil/0.4) and the freshman laffer Extended Family (3.2 mil/0.4), which was cancelled on Tuesday as well.

Starring George Lopez and his real-life daughter, Mayan, Lopez vs. Lopez aimed to “put the fun back in dysfunctional family comedy” — though Season 2 brought with it a big life changes for Mayan and the whole Lopez familia, while George took his first step in sobriety.

“So many things in my career have come from real life,” George Lopez told TVLine ahead of Season 2. “I came from a place where alcohol was abused, and then I abused it — but I also abused it around people who didn’t abuse it, and then that’s when it became a bigger and more concerning issue.”

Lopez stands firmly by the choice to tackle such weighty and deeply personal matters on a TV sitcom.

“People say, ‘Hey, man, it’s TV, it’s comedy,’ but [TV episodes] last forever,” Lopez noted, alluding to similar storylines on shows such as Family Ties (where a young Tom Hanks played Alex’s alcoholic uncle). “People say, ‘Oh, you wouldn’t be able to do that today,’ but you can if you want to. If you never push the button, how do you know the button works? If it’s done well, you can get away with it. Or you can not do it and not get away with it.”
