Loop 88, Woodrow Road construction moves forward in Lubbock County

Two major road projects will prompt lane closures on several major south Lubbock thoroughfares starting Monday morning.

The work is part of ongoing progress on Woodrow Road and Loop 88, two separate projects aimed at improving traffic flow in Lubbock County.

Loop 88 construction

University and Quaker Avenue drivers can expect traffic changes starting this week at Loop 88 as work on the intersections begins Monday. Construction crews will reduce the number of driving lanes to allow them to safely begin building the Loop 88 intersections, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Southbound traffic at both intersections will be reduced to one through-lane, one left-turn only lane and one right-turn only lane. Northbound traffic, at both intersections, will have one left-turn lane and one through/right-turn lane.

Drivers can expect the lane closure to be in place for several months, should anticipate delays and consider using an alternate route around the work zone.

The work will take place weather permitting and is part of a $154.8 million project to convert FM 1585 from a rural, two-lane roadway into Loop 88, a six-lane freeway with frontage roads, bridges, and ramps.

Woodrow Road construction

Also starting Monday, a project will begin to make major improvements to Woodrow Road (CR 7600), from US 87 to Indiana Avenue, in Lubbock County. The $38 million Lubbock County project will completely rebuild the existing roadway from a two-lane rural roadway to a five-lane thoroughfare. The project is part of a nearly $100 bond package Lubbock County voters approved in 2019.

The project is funded by Lubbock County but TxDOT is overseeing the contract and construction work that will rebuild 2.7 miles of Woodrow Road to include two lanes of traffic in each direction, a continuous left-turn lane and will make drainage and traffic signal improvements, according to TxDOT.

Motorists traveling on Woodrow Road can expect traffic to continue to be one-lane in each direction, side street closures, slow moving traffic and delays. Students and parents are advised to give themselves extra time for school drop-offs and pick-ups.

Plans call for work to begin at Avenue P.

Drivers are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic and should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.

  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.

  • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

The general contractor for the Woodrow Road project is Webber, LLC, of The Woodlands. The project is anticipated to be completed in fall 2026.
