Many communities are gearing up for Memorial Day ceremonies and activities, but several activities devoted to difficult but necessary family discussions are being held throughout the area before then.

Here’s what’s happening this week.

1. Meet Victor author of ‘Walk On'

Victor graduate Stephen Panus will discuss his new book, “Walk On,” an inspirational and emotionally powerful story of a father who suffered every parent’s worst nightmare. 2. Have a talk with the reverend in Canandaigua

A conversation with Rev. Ryan White is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 21 at the United Church, 11 Gibson St., Canandaigua. White and his wife Alethia serve as regional liaisons for Northern and Central Europe. White is actively motivated in addressing the climate change priorities of the Presbyterian Church USA Matthew 25 initiative as well as the issues of global migration and concerns for justice in Israel and Palestine. 3. Dementia-related behavior explained in Canandaigua

The program, “Alzheimer's Association: Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior,” will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 22, at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and strategies to intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. 4. How to avoid being a financial scam victim

The program, “Financial Literacy: Identity Theft and Credit Reports,” will be held at 6 p.m. May 22 at Victor Farmington Library, 15 W. Main St., Victor. 5. What happens next?

A discussion on end-of-life choices will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 22 at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. This discussion celebrates life and honoring personhood through life's final stages as well as delves into hospice, community resources and related topics. 6. Girl Scouts will serve dinner in Victor

The next free community dinner will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Presbyterian Church of Victor, 70 E. Main St., Victor. The dinner will be hosted by the Girl Scouts. Pianist Marcia Torpey will perform. Dinners are served the second, third and fourth Saturdays of the month at the church, which has been offering free meals for 17 years. No reservations are necessary. Takeout can be provided by calling 585-924-2289 during meal hours.
