Looking for a Mother's Day activity in Topeka? Here's one featuring more than 40 vendors.

Prepare for Mother's Day with a twist at this event in Topeka.

The first Mother's Day Craft Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 at the Great Overland Station, 701 N. Kansas Ave.

Event organizer Nikki Blackburn said more than 40 craft vendors will be on site for attendees to purchase items for mothers, grandmothers and more. Items include a wide variety of handmade crafts like soaps, crochet items, candles, wooden products and more.

Vendors will be from across northeast Kansas.

A children's craft, a possible historical exhibit and a photo booth will also be available. The Mother's Day Craft Fair will be free to attendees.

"Mother's Day falls on a Sunday, of course, but we wanted to have it on that weekend but not on that actual day, because you might already have your activities going on," Blackburn said. "It's good for the last-minute shoppers, too."

Mother's Day in the United States is Sunday, May 12. The holiday falls on the second Sunday of May every year.

When do other countries celebrate Mother's Day?

Mother's Day around falls on different dates and times of the year around the world. Some follow the official May 12 Day.

For example, this year, mothers in the United Kingdom were honored on March 10, which is based around Christian observance of Lent. "Mothering Sunday" takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is three weeks before Easter Sunday.

In Mexico, Día de las Madres is celebrated on May 10 every year, according to the Arizona Republic.

What's the history of Mother's Day?

Mother’s Day celebrated in the United States, originally dates back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis, of West Virginia, helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs" to teach local women how to properly care for their children, according to history.com.

It became an official U.S. Holiday in 1914, established by President Woodrow Wilson. Later in her life, Jarvis would denounce the commercialization of the holiday, making efforts to remove it from the calendar.
