A photo of Lia Thomas on the podium at the NCAA Championships went viral last month, but according to Poynter, it’s inaccurate.

The photo showed Thomas on the podium while three other female swimmers celebrated together. According to some on social media, the three other swimmers were “protesting” Penn’s transgender swimmer.

That isn’t the case, though.

The three other athletes were simply taking a photo together, as they’re close friends. They have voiced their support for Thomas.

“The viral podium photo simply doesn’t show female swimmers protesting Lia Thomas’ win. The athletes pictured in the photo (besides Weyant) have publicly voiced their support for Thomas and transgender athletes like her,” Poynter writes.

Thomas won an NCAA championship at Penn this past season, becoming the first transgender athlete to do so.

Her collegiate career is over, though she could purse a spot in the Olympics.
