A look at UM’s 2024 recruiting class after another pledge. Here’s who’s now committed

The Miami Hurricanes’ list of 2024 football commitments keeps growing; after a recent flurry, UM has non-binding pledges from 13 players.

But how this UM class will be viewed rests largely on the decisions, in the months ahead, of more than a half dozen elite prospects who have been considering Miami, a group that includes five-star Bradenton IMG Academy defensive lineman David Stone (247 Sports’ No. 10 overall prospect), five-star Chicago based defensive lineman Justin Scott (rated 21st overall by 247) and four-star Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna athlete Joshisa Trader (rated 44th), among others.

For now, UM’s class is rated in the 20s by four major recruiting services — 22nd by ESPN, 23rd by On3, 27th by Rivals and 28th by 247.

UM’s latest commitment came Monday night, when three-star Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas safety/cornerback Ryan Mack committed.

Mack — rated by 247 as the No. 50 safety and the No. 514 overall player in the 2024 class — chose UM over Georgia Tech and FSU, among others.

Mack, whose father Rod played for UM in the 1990s, finished last season with 21 tackles, seven pass break-ups, two interceptions and a forced fumble. He has run the 100 meters in less than 11 seconds, which is very good.

In some ways, Mack fits the profile of most of Miami’s 2024 pledges so far — three-star prospects who aren’t rated among the nation’s top 250 recruits. He chose Miami over offers from Penn State, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh, among others.

Of UM’s 13 commitments, 10 are rated three-star prospects by 247. Three are rated four-star prospects: Alabama-based running back Kevin Riley (rated 105th overall by 247), St. Thomas Aquinas receiver Chance Robinson (141) and Las Vegas-based tight end Elija Lofton (242).

ESPN calls Lofton an “intriguing pickup” but said he “lacks ideal size (6-2, 220) but is a versatile player with good hands and body control. He reminds us of former Hurricanes standout tight end Brevin Jordan.”

ESPN — which rates UM’s class the highest of the four prominent media outlets that analyze recruiting — calls Riley “one of the top running back prospects in the class. He possesses good vision and agility, as well as the lower body strength to create yards after contact.”

Among UM’s 10 three-star commitments, ESPN singled out 6-3, 190-pound Alabama-based linebacker Cameron Pruitt, noting he “could project to several spots on defense. Wherever he’s utilized, he will bring a physical presence, as he can be a big hitter and should immediately be a strong special teams contributor.”

Beyond Pruitt and the newest addition Mack, here are UM’s other three-star commitments for 2024:

Three-star safeties Dylan Day (from Baton Rouge, Louisiana) and Isaiah Thomas (Clearwater). 247 rates them the 79th- and 69th-best safeties, respectively, in the 2024 class.

Miami Central linebacker Vincent Shavers, rated by 247 as the 75th-best linebacker in this class. Shavers, who’s listed at 6-1 and 210 pounds, had 56 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and eight sacks for Miami Gardens Monsignor Pace last season.

South Broward High running back Chris Wheatley-Humphrey, who is rated by 247 as the 81st-best running back. He rushed for more than 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns in seven games last season.

New Jersey-based offensive lineman Juan Minaya. Though 247 rates him only 103rd among tackle prospects, he attracted serious interest during the recruiting process, selecting UM over offers from Florida, Penn State and many others.

Miami Columbus high defensive lineman Daylen Russell, who’s rated the No. 127 defensive lineman in the 2024 class.

Russell — who chose UM over Nebraska and Louisville — was the Miami Herald’s Defensive Player of the Year in Miami-Dade County last season, finishing with 51 tackles and seven sacks in 10 games.

Georgia-based quarterback Judd Anderson. 247 Sports rates him only 69th among QBs in this cycle, but UM likes the size (6-7), pocket presence and arm strength. He threw for 1776 yards and 15 touchdowns last season but also had 13 interceptions.

Louisiana-based kicker Abram Murray, rated third among all 2024 kickers.

Among UM’s three four-star prospects, 247 rates Riley fourth among running backs, Lofton 16th among tight ends and Robinson 24th among receivers.
