Bruce Arians is retiring as a head coach and transitioning to a senior consulting role for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,

Pro Football Talk’s Peter King and Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reported the unexpected news Wednesday night, and Tampa Bay has already named defensive coordinator Todd Bowles its new head coach.

Tom Brady, who also retired two months ago but later changed his mind, thanked Arians in a lengthy Instagram post.

“You are an incredible man and coach, and it was a privilege to play for you,” Brady wrote. “You are a true NFL legend and pioneer for all the work you have done to make the league more diverse and inclusive.”

Brady called Arians “smart, tough, and loyal” and said everything they discussed before the quarterback joined Tampa Bay “came true.”

“We all benefited from your leadership and guidance and I’m so proud of everything we accomplished. You were a huge part of the decision to join the Bucs and I’m forever grateful.”

Brady closed by congratulating Arians for leaving his mark on the game.

Brady and Arians won a Super Bowl in their first year together and went to the NFC Championship last season. With Brady back from a short-lived retirement, the Buccaneers are once again positioned to make a title run.

As Arians told King and Farmer, transitioning a title contender to Bowles made his decision to retire easier. He also denied Brady having anything to do with the decision, saying that they have a “great relationship off the field.”

While speculation is quickly running rampant, Arians and Brady have publicly shown nothing but appreciation for admiration for one another in light of Arians’ retirement.
