The U.S. Open wasn’t a great event for either Phil Mickelson or Bryson DeChambeau. In a few weeks, those two golf stars will turn their attention to a less traditional event, The Match, which will also feature NFL star quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

Mickelson, the surprise winner of the PGA Championship earlier this spring, struggled at Torrey Pines over the weekend. An impressive second-round 69 allowed him to make the cut, but he shot 76 and 75 over the weekend to wrap up at +11, tied for 62nd place.

DeChambeau’s weekend was more tragic. After a middling Thursday on which he shot a 73, he was tremendous in Rounds 2 and 3, with a 69 followed by a 68. On Sunday, he was in the heart of contention after posting a -2 in the front nine to move into a tie for first at -5. He then proceeded to bogey the 11th and 12th holes, doubled the 13th, and quadruple-bogeyed the par-four 17th hole to finish with a 77 for the day and +3 for the tournament, nine strokes behind tournament champion Jon Rahm.

Brady will be playing with Mickelson against Rodgers and DeChambeau on July 6 for The Match. He had a funny message for the two golfers, as well as Rodgers, on Tuesday, calling the made-for-TV event a “far more prestigious tournament” before impressively nailing three long putts on video.

Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson fell to his longtime rival Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods last year, but Brady played better as that day wore on. Based on this video, it looks like he’s been working on his game in anticipation of this year’s match.

We certainly can’t wait. After Brady’s victory over Rodgers in the NFC Championship and consequent Super Bowl win with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rodgers’ offseason drama with the Green Bay Packers, and all that has gone on with Phil and Bryson over the last few weeks, The Match won’t be hurting for storylines.

The event begins at 5 p.m. ET on July 6 from Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana. TNT will have the coverage.
