Look: Texans Release Telling Quarterback Depth Chart
The Houston Texans plan for Deshaun Watson at training camp has been confusing to say the least. As the 25-year-old faces over 20 allegations of sexual misconduct and continues to demand a trade, the organization has held him out of training camp for the most part.
Watson returned to practice for the first time in a week on Monday, causing even further confusion about where he stands with the team and amongst the Texans’ other quarterbacks. Houston general manager Nick Caserio followed up Watson’s training camp appearance by indicating that the 25-year-old wouldn’t play in the team’s preseason opener.
On Wednesday, fans got an indicator on how the Texans view Watson’s current position on the roster.
Houston released their first unofficial depth chart on Wednesday, so naturally all eyes drifted to the order of players at the quarterback position. The first signal caller listed was 32-year-old veteran Tyrod Taylor.
2021 signee Jeff Driskel filled the Texans backup role and rookie third-rounder Davis Mills came third.
Finally, in the fourth quarterback spot: Deshaun Watson.

The list, although unofficial, gives a partial glimpse into how the Texans view Watson at this current time. Houston might want to hold onto the three-time Pro Bowler, but clearly recognize that with the ongoing legal proceedings, the 25-year-old won’t be seeing the field anytime soon.
According to Yahoo Sports NFL insider Charles Robinson, the Texans still want Watson to be the team’s starting quarterback and will try to convince him to stay with the team before the start of the regular season. Houston hasn’t taken any trade offers for the three-time Pro Bowler that seriously, despite Watson’s desire to leave.
It’s also possible that the Texans put last year’s starter fourth on the depth chart to try and prevent further questions about his status with the team. That potential tactic probably won’t work, as Wednesday’s release only caused more confusion amongst fans.
Watson’s immediate future in Houston and in the NFL is unclear and seems murkier then ever with the first depth chart drop. All eyes will surely stay on the Texans quarterback situation right up until the team’s starter takes the field in Week 1 of the regular season.
