On Saturday afternoon, Alabama will face off against nemesis Auburn without head coach Nick Saban on the sideline.

Saban tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, which means he won’t be able to coach his team in one of the biggest rivalry games in the sport. It’s a tough blow for Alabama, but the Tide are still heavily favored.

While the tradition of Saban on the sideline will be broken this weekend, at least one tradition will love on. According to Alabama reporter Rick Karle, Saban’s daughter, Kristen, has delivered the coach a special penny before game day.

“It was January 3rd, 2004, and Kristen Saban was over the moon with excitement,” Karle reported. “Her dad would be coaching the LSU Tigers against Oklahoma in the national championship game the following day. The then-8-year-old wanted her dad to have a good luck charm, so she handed Nick Saban her lucky penny. Her dad smiled and slipped the penny into his pocket.”

Since they can’t be together for the game today, Kristen delivered the penny in an envelope.

The lucky penny has worked out pretty well for Saban at Alabama over the years.

Six national titles later, maybe it was the penny and not Saban after all.

As for today’s game, Alabama and Auburn kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Steve Sarkisian will be the Tide’s head coach.
