The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals just played the feud in the eighth inning of this afternoon’s game at Busch Stadium.

Things came to a head today, but this altercation was brewing for a while. Mets batters had been hit a league-high 18 times coming into the game, including four in the last two days. Two Cardinals hitters were also tagged by Mets pitchers last night.

When New York’s J.D. Davis got hit earlier in the day, even though it was unintentional, everyone knew retaliation was coming. In the bottom of the eighth, Mets reliever Yoan Lopez fired back, buzzing St. Louis designated hitter Nolan Arenado up-and-in.

Arenado took exception, and challenged the Mets to come after him. Both benches cleared, as did the bullpens, and a solid scuffle ensued.

When all was said and done, Arenado was ejected, as was Cardinals coach Stubby Clapp, who dragged Mets first baseman Pete Alonso to the ground during the fracas.

While Mets fans are not happy about their hitters being target practice, they can take solace in two things. Even after losing today, they are 14-6 overall, and having a brewing rivalry with the Cardinals means the team is likely going to have a good season.

When the Mets were in their 1980s heyday, they had bad blood with St. Louis, and the same can be said in 2006 when both teams advanced to the NLCS. There’s a long way to go to October, but we only have to wait a few weeks to see these two squads face off again in New York.
