Four years ago the United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) missed 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification after suffering a stunning loss to Trinidad & Tobago. But today their road to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar begins against El Salvador, and USMNT legend Landon Donovan has a message for the team.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Donovan lamented that loss to the Soca Warriors four years ago. But he believes that the “road to redemption” begins today.

“It’s been almost four years since that awful night in Trinidad. Today, the road to redemption begins,” Donovan wrote.

The American Outlaws and general USMNT fans are all getting pumped up by Donovan’s message. His comments section and retweets are filled to the brim with excited fans.

The USMNT will have a different qualifying method this time around. Rather than the six-team CONCACAF “Hex” with 10 games, the USMNT must play 14 games against seven CONCACAF rivals.

Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, El Salvador, Canada and Panama all stand in the way of the USMNT punching their tickets to Qatar.

Over the next few days, the USMNT will face El Salvador on the road, Canada in Nashville, and Honduras on the road. They will then have four more sets of qualifying matches against their remaining opponents in October, November, January, February and March.

The three countries that get the most points on the table will qualify for the World Cup. The team that finishes fourth will take part in the inter-confederation play-offs for the final spots.

Will the USMNT beat El Salvador and begin their World Cup qualifying journey with three points?
