On Wednesday, Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving made headlines for something he said on Twitter.

“My mask is off. Now take yours off. No fear,” Irving said on the social media platform. Immediately after he posted the message, it went viral with people jumping to conclusions.

Some suggested it had something to do with the pandemic – which is a fair point given the world we live in right now. Others, however, suggested it had a more nuanced meaning.

Well, those suggesting the latter were correct. On Wednesday night, Irving took to social media once again to clear things up.

“‘Mask off’ means You stop being something you’re not and stop lying to yourself,” Irving said on Wednesday night. “It’s the moment you discover the real you and can walk around with NO FEAR in a society that shows a lot of the masks people wear to hide who they truly are. *nothing COVID rule related!! Relax.”

The star point guard never seems to be too far away from a viral comment that causes some sort of controversy on social media.

At the end of the day, everyone was reading a little bit too much into his post. That’s par for the course when it comes to social media, though.
