Whether it’s thanks to his consistent on-court excellence or just some great colorways, the Kyrie Irving series of Nike shoes has become one of the brand’s most popular in recent years. But the soon-to-be-released Kyrie 8 shoes seem to have the Brooklyn Nets star fuming.

In a recent statement, Kyrie ripped Nike for their recent designs and marketing for the upcoming shoe release. He said that the company moved forward with releasing the Kyrie 8 without his permission and apologized to his fans.

The statement was in response to leaked images on Instagram of the upcoming shoe. While opinions on the shoe itself are mixed, Kyrie was clearly not a fan.

“I have nothing to do with the design or marketing of the upcoming #Kyrie8, IMO these are trash!” Kyrie wrote. “I have Absolutely nothing to do with them! Nike plans to release it without my okay regardless of what I say, so I apologize in advance to all of my sneaker heads and true supporters of the #KAI11 brand.”

On the court, Kyrie Irving is one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. He’s a seven-time All-Star and won an NBA title with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.

But in the shoe industry, Kyrie has rapidly risen to the top of the industry. His sales are through the roof, and more NBA players wear his shoes on the court than any other player other than the late-great Kobe Bryant.

However, the man takes great pride in his brand and how he’s represented with his merchandise. Knowing Kyrie, things can get ugly between him and Nike if they don’t change course.

Is Kyrie Irving overreacting here, or does he deserve more input into what the shoes that bear his name look like?
