John Madden once had one heck of a comment about Tom Brady when he was just getting started in the NFL.

Madden was calling a Patriots-Steelers game in September of 2002 when he spoke about how Brady’s calmness reminded him of Joe Montana.

Montana is widely considered to be one of the best quarterbacks to ever do it. The fact that Madden even uttered Brady in the same breath as Montana at the time goes to show how special he already was.

“I hate to say what I’m going to say but I’m going to say it anyway that Tom Brady and his calmness reminds me of Joe Montana,” Madden said. “I’m not saying Tom Brady is Joe Montana but I’m saying the way he gets back there and makes everything look so effortlessly and easy, he reminds me of Joe Montana.”

Brady has gone on to have one heck of a career in the 20 years since that comment.

He’s won seven Super Bowls and is trying to win the eighth one in 2022 after he announced his return to the NFL earlier this month.

Madden was often on the spot with his analysis and this one was no different.
