Late Friday night, Team USA basketball player JaVale McGee made himself available to the media for questions.

In hindsight, he probably shouldn’t have done that. While he was sitting at the podium taking questions, one reporter decided it would be a good idea to ask a very strange question.

Joe Vardon of the Athletic – who had a run-in with Gregg Popovich earlier this month – asked if McGee’s mother was still alive. Yes, that’s an actual question he asked in front of other reporters – and McGee.

“Hi JaVale and welcome aboard. I’m not sure, is your mother still with us?” Vardon asked. McGee, taken aback by the question, responded “Is my mom alive? Yeah she’s still alive.”

He went on to point out how odd the question was. “That’s a weird question to ask someone,” the Denver Nuggets player said.

Check it out.

McGee made it clear he wasn’t happy with the question. He later took to social media to show a photo of his mom alive and well – and in the gym.

Vardon asked the question because he was writing a story about McGee and whether or not he’d be able to live up to his mom’s basketball legacy. She and the women’s basketball team took home gold in the 1984 Olympics Games.

McGee is still searching for his first gold medal – which he could get very soon. However, while the question was relevant to a story, Vardon easily could have researched that bit of information rather than asking McGee point blank if his mother was alive.
