Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has been receiving a ton of criticism this afternoon because of his unit’s performance against Oregon. The defense has struggled so much that even former Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones called him out.

Jones had a telling response to a tweet from former Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell, who came to Coombs’ defense during the second half of today’s game.

“Before y’all throw stones at Coach Coombs and the defense I do want y’all to know that RPOs(run pass options) are very difficult to deal with. And man sometimes is the best answer,” Powell said.”The problem isn’t necessarily the call it’s the execution. The on site adjustments is the problem.”

That message from Powell didn’t sit well with Jones. He ultimately believes Powell was making excuses for Coombs.

“I don’t wanna hear that s***, he gets paid to stop the offense,” Jones replied. “Figure it out instead of rotating 47 players and having 69 checks and adjustments!”

Powell responded to Jones’ tweet about Coombs, placing the blame for today’s performance on the team’s defensive backs.

“The sad thing is it’s not even the RPOs killing us,” Powell wrote. “It’s not the play calling either. They got 21 points bc DBs aren’t crack replacing. I don’t wanna hear none of that stuff y’all talking bout. Crack replace was taught in middle school.”

Ohio State came up with a crucial stop in the fourth quarter to stay within a single possession. It’ll be up to C.J. Stroud and the offense to even up the score.

The closing minutes of the Ohio State-Oregon game can be seen on FOX.
