The New Orleans Saints began the first year of the post-Drew Brees era with Jameis Winston under center. Winston promptly delivered the team’s first post-Brees victory with a dominating win over the Green Bay Packers.

In the process of that big win, Winston did something that his predecessor very rarely did. According to ESPN’s Paul Hembekides, Winston’s fourth quarter touchdown pass to Deonte Harris traveled 50 yards in the air.

Hembekides said that out of the 9,421 passes that Brees threw for the Saints, none had that much air. Though it wasn’t clear exactly how that stat was measured.

While getting air on the ball was an issue for Brees in his last few NFL seasons, he got air on the ball plenty of time earlier in his tenure. Many of them got 60 yards of total air, but only after he was about 11 or more yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Regardless, it’s clear that Jameis Winston didn’t lose any of his arm strength in the year he spent riding the New Orleans Saints’ bench.

Winston only threw for 148 yards. And that was largely because the team had such good ball control all game that he didn’t need to throw for the 300-400 yards per game he had with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He finished the game with a 70-percent completion rate and a career-high tying five touchdown passes. Not bad for your first start with a team.
