Look out, Costco. A rival warehouse retailer may open first Texas store in Fort Worth.

Costco and Sam’s Club could be getting some new competition in North Texas.

A filing with the city of Fort Worth this week suggests BJ’s Wholesale Club is considering a site off Chisholm Trail Parkway. It could be the first BJ’s location in Texas; most of the retailer’s locations are on the East Coast from Maine to Florida, and across the South.

An application for a commercial grading permit and a drainage study for a BJ’s Wholesale Club at 5901 Altamesa Blvd. was filed with the city Monday. Such filings are a very preliminary step in the development process.

The site is undeveloped land on the southwest corner of Altamesa and Chisholm Trail Parkway.

BJ’s head of corporate communications, Kirk Saville, would not confirm Thursday the company’s plans for Fort Worth or Texas.

“We are continually looking to grow our club footprint and bring outstanding value to new communities. Our real estate pipeline is the strongest it’s been in years,” Saville told the Star-Telegram in an email response to questions.

The 20.34 acre property is owned by Pate Ranch Retail LP. The lot was valued at over $1.8 million in 2023, according to data from the Tarrant Appraisal Office.

BJ’s is a membership-based warehouse store where shoppers can buy products in bulk and gasoline at discounted prices compared to other retailers.

The company said it “consistently offers 25% or more savings on a representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries compared to traditional supermarket competitors.” Stores typically have fresh foods, produce, delis and bakeries, household goods, small appliances and clothing. Standard membership is $55 a year.

First opened in Massachusetts in 1984, the chain now has 7 million members. Its 244 clubs and 175 gas stations are located in 20 states.

The company’s 2023 fiscal year revenue was over $19 billion, an increase of more than 3% from the previous fiscal year. BJ’s 2024 first quarter gross profit was $883.4 million.

BJ’s plans to open 12 new stores and 15 gas stations across the U.S. during its 2024 fiscal year, as the brand expands in the Southeast and Midwest.

“We are also growing our footprint and remain on track for 12 new club openings this year,” BJ’s chairman and CEO, Bob Eddy, said in a press release announcing the company’s first quarter earnings.

If BJ’s does expand to Fort Worth, it could face steep competition from other warehouse stores with a presence in the region. Costco, which is a larger company with more than 800 locations worldwide, has 39 stores in Texas, and Walmart-owned Sam’s Club has 82 Texas stores.

A prospective BJ’s joins a wave of recent commercial interest in southwest Fort Worth.

In December, Target filed an application for a drainage study of a 34-acre lot on the corner of Chisholm Trail Parkway and McPherson Boulevard, city records show.

Texas-based grocer H-E-B purchased land at nearby The Shops at Chisholm Trail Ranch in March 2023, though no plans for the property have been announced.
