General manager Mike Mayock and head coach Jon Gruden are heading into their third season together with the Raiders organization. Through their first two years, this GM/HC pair have failed to earn a playoff berth on each occasion — notching a combined 15-17 record.

On Wednesday, Mayock told reporters that the Raiders “need to be a playoff team” this year.

Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd reacted to these statements during his show on Thursday, giving some pretty harsh critiques of Gruden and the Las Vegas organization.

“I never liked the 10-year contract for Jon Gruden,” he said on The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd. “Mike Mayock laid it out there and said the Raiders are a playoff team. I don’t see it.”

Gruden signed a massive 10-year contract with the Raiders before embarking on his reunion with the team in 2018. Cowherd argued that the veteran head coach is “not the kind of personality” you give a 10-year contract, saying he “runs too hot” and gets too invested in particular players.

While Mayock and Gruden may feel like it’s time for a playoff run, Cowherd believes this is the Raiders’ worst squad in the Jon Gruden coaching era.

“Jon can coach,” he said. “But when you lay it out there, I think this team’s his worst team.”

This past season, the Raiders logged an 8-8 record — the best year since Gruden’s return to the organization.

Las Vegas will kickoff their 2021 season with a Week 1 matchup against Baltimore next Monday.
