Several current and former head coach coaches have been linked to USC ever since the program fired Clay Helton on Monday. One of the former coaches being mentioned as a candidate is Bob Stoops.

During an appearance on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM this Wednesday, Stoops was asked about the rumors linking him to USC. His comments were interesting to say the least.

“Well, I can’t control rumors,” Stoops said. “I don’t get involved in rumors. I’ve never acknowledged one way or the other whether someone has contacted me or not. And I won’t in this case, either.”

Then, Stoops admit that he won’t completely deny these rumors because life is unpredictable.

“I’m enjoying my opportunity to work with Fox. I love watching my sons — one’s playing and one’s on the sidelines coaching,” Stoop said. “But in life, you just never know what just fits you perfectly. And I’m not saying this does. They’re going to go through a list of coaches that are already on the field that probably can’t even talk to them until the season’s over. I didn’t ask for my name to be attached to this, but I can’t help it that it is.”

Though he did say he’s enjoying his new role with Fox Sports, it seems as if Stoops is leaving the door open for a return to coaching.

Stoops was an exceptional coach for the Oklahoma Sooners, owning a 190-48 record in over a decade with the program. He took a break from the sideline for a few years before joining the Dallas Renegades of the XFL in 2020.

It’d be really interesting to see what Stoops could accomplish at USC, but it’s unclear at this time if this pairing will actually happen.
