Look: What The BCS Top 25 Rankings Would Look Like

The final set of College Football Playoff rankings was released just after noon ET on Sunday, revealing which four teams would compete for a national championship. Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Cincinnati earned the honors after landing the top four spots in the latest reveal.

Much has been made about the committee’s decisions over the years in the playoff system and question have arisen about the final set of rankings once again in 2021. However, even under the old BCS system, it looks like this year’s national semifinals would’ve ended up with the same four teams.

According to BCSKnowHow.com, which simulates what the BCS rankings would be if the system still existed today, had the same four teams and in the same order as the CFP committee did. Alabama came first with a BCS Score of 0.9846 and Michigan was a clear second at 0.9453. Georgia and Cincinnati easily slotted in at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively, with Notre Dame on the outside looking in at No. 5.

Most of the top 10 teams in the BCS projections lined up with the committee’s final rankings. In fact, the only departure came at No. 8 and No. 9 between Oklahoma State and Ole Miss. The CFP gave the Rebels the nod, whereas in the BCS rankings, the Cowboys would’ve narrowly came out on top.

There were some wider divides later on in the BCS rankings. Both the Oklahoma Sooners and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns came in much lower in the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee than they would have in the BCS.

However, at least for the most part, the two rankings systems matched up. That should give those upset with the committee’s final decision some peace of mind moving forward.

Regardless of any gripes, the playoff will go on as scheduled. Alabama will take on Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl before Michigan squares off with Georgia in the Orange Bowl.
