Any concerns about Alex Ovechkin leaving the Washington Capitals in free agency were put to rest this Tuesday afternoon, as the team just announced a new contract for the 12-time All-Star.

Ovechkin has signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract with the Capitals. He’ll reportedly have a cap hit of $9.5 million under this deal.

Though he could’ve pursued a deal elsewhere this offseason, Ovechkin is heavily committed to Washington’s franchise and community.

Capitals senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan released a statement on Ovechkin’s new deal with the team.

“Alex is the face of our franchise and is committed to this organization and this city,” MacLellan said. “Alex embodies what our franchise is all about, and we’re thrilled that he will continue his career in the Caps uniform for the next five years

Washington fans are thrilled that Ovechkin will remain with the franchise for the foreseeable future.

Ovechkin confirmed the move on his Twitter account, writing “I’M BACK DC.”

The Capitals rank second in the NHL in wins and points since Ovechkin made his debut for them in 2005. That’s make sense considering he’s the franchise leader in games played, goals and points.

Ovechkin, 35, remains one of the best players in hockey. He had 24 goals and 18 assists in just 45 games this past season.
