Local Sports: SMCC girls, Whiteford boys earn invitational titles

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson billed its Marauder Invitational Friday as the “The Battle of the Leagues – Downriver vs. Huron.”

If it truly was a meet to decide which league is best, there was no decision for the girls.

St. Mary Catholic Central of the Huron League and Downriver’s Woodhaven tied for the championship with 92 points each.

The Huron League had the edge for boys with Riverview (82.5) and Milan (71) took the top two spots.

SMCC’s girls won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Macy Carlton and Bella LaFountain were part of both quartets. Others joining the relays were Adela Illes, Ashley Ruhlig, Claire Lisker and Samantha LaFountain.

MaryAlice Lynch was a runner-up for the Kestrels in the high hurdles and ran with Ruhlig, Alaina Wille and Illes on the second-place 400 relay.

Flat Rock’s Reagan Higdon won the 100 and 200 dashes. She also anchored the Rams’ winning 800 relay with Sophia Chan, McKenna Williams and Mrya Shaw.

Other champions from Monroe County Region schools were Courtney Bovair of Airport (1,600) and Falyn Doss (3,200) and Natalie Carlile (pole vault) of New Boston Huron.

Milan’s boys hit 43.16 in the 400 relay with Nolan Matley, Adam Johnson, Noah Bussell and Virgile Gruwez-Guinet to break a school record that had stood since 1989.

Gavin Tomecek, Bussell, Matley and Gruwex-Guinet won the 800 relay. Johnson also won the 200 meters and was second in the 400.

Airport’s Matt Foor swept the shot-put and discus and New Boston Huron’s Cayden Kirby was the champ in the high jump, Jacob Stanislawski of Flat Rock finished first in the 3,200 and Gibraltar Carlson’s Izaiah Wright took the 100.

TRACK AND FIELD

Whiteford boys reign

WEBBERVILLE – Whiteford’s boys won a trio of events and took first in the big school division of the Auburn C. Perkins Spartan Invitational Friday.

The Bobcat champs were Keegan Masters (800), Jess Saylor (400) and the 1,600 relay of Nate Andrews, Ryin Ruddy, Saylor, and Masters.

Seconds came from Andrews (400), Ruddy (low hurdles) and Masters (1,600).

Alaina McClain (800) and Kenzi Gray (shot-put) were runners-up for Whiteford’s sixth-place girls. Gray had a personal-best of 100-3 to take fifth in the discus.

PREP BASEBALL

Ida sweeps SMCC

IDA – Noah Adkins went 2-for-3 with a double in the first game and Jacob Towne blasted a long home run in the second as Ida swept St. Mary Catholic Central 6-4 and 9-1 Friday.

Ida improved to 8-6.

“We had a nice week of baseball,” Ida coach Jimmy McMonagle said. “Things are starting to click a little bit for us.”

Nolan Moore went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the second game and Brennan Runyon and Jaden Paquette had a hit in each game for SMCC.

Four hits for Kantola

DEARBORN – Kyle Kantola rang up four hits to lead New Boston Huron to a 10-0 win over Dearborn Divine Child Thursday.

Nate Morse drove in four runs and Micah Smith earned the win for 14-1 Huron.

Whiteford rallies

OTTAWA LAKE – Mason VanBrandt’s walk-off single capped a five-run rally in the seventh inning that gave Whiteford an 8-7 victory over Adrian Madison in the first game of a doubleheader Friday.

Brendan Masters and Game 2 winning pitcher Tri Eitniear had three hits each for 13-1 Whiteford.

Hickey delivers winner

GRASS LAKE – Jay Hickey’s RBI single snapped a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and Ethan Layton plated an insurance run with a suicide squeeze bunt as Dundee nipped Grass Lake 7-5 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday.

Joey Brink logged three hits, including a triple, and Chris LaFountain, Cooper Buhl and Hickey had multi-hit games.

The 9-4 Vikings completed the sweep by taking the nightcap 9-3 as Quinton Lephew delivered three hits and three RBI. Brink, Buhl, and Ryan Zanger added two hits each.

PREP SOFTBALL

Milan, Whiteford split

MILAN – Milan and Whiteford played two different-style games Friday.

Whiteford won the opener 1-0 as Unity Nelson tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Milan scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 9-8 win in the second game highlighted by Leila Daniels’ three-run homer.

Georgia Linzell went 3-for-3 for Milan.

Shay Alexander, Koralyn Billau and Addeson Cousino had two hits each for 7-3 Whit4eford.

Butt blasts slam

GIBRALTAR – Addison Butt went 3-for-4 with a double and a grand slam and tossed two scoreless innings of relief to lead Gibraltar Carlson (9-2) past Garden City 17-6 Friday.

Taylor Konkus and Lauren Dunwoody added three hits each and Konkus drove in five runs. Kiley Lewandowski, Ava Auler and Kara Ludy each chipped in two hits apiece.

Jefferson-Mason gets tie

NEWPORT – Adriaunna Moore scored off an assist from Morgan Simota to give Jefferson-Erie Mason a 1-1 tie with Lincoln Park Friday night.

Alena Schafer led strong defense in front of goalkeeper Dakota Cousino.

Bedford shorthanded

WOODHAVEN – A red card forced Bedford to play the second half with just 10 on the field and the Mules fell 6-4 to Woodhaven.

Madden Mosley scored half of Bedford’s goals and Maddie Helpman and Elizabeth Klocek also found the back of the net.

PREP GOLF

Bahn leads Dundee

DUNDEE – Carter Bahn shot 42, Andy Barnes 42 and Levi Evans 44 to lead Dundee to third place to a Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree at Dundee Golf Club Friday.

The Vikings shot 177 to finish behind Clinton (173) and Blissfield (177).

Ida, which finished fifth with 183, was led by Zack Bailey with 43 and Davin Slater and Michael Wolfe with 45s.
