Local Sports Recap: Hillsdale golf and tennis teams win matches in challenging week

HILLSDALE — It was another successful week for the girls tennis and boys golf teams over at Hillsdale High School, despite the challenges both teams faced in league play. The Hillsdale varsity girls tennis team had three matchups to compete in, including a particularly tough match against Lansing Christian on Friday. The Hillsdale boys golf team also had a challenging LCAA jamboree on Friday.

The Hillsdale girls tennis team was able to win two of their three duals. It defeated Leslie 7-1 at home. Winning for the Hornets was No. 1 singles Abby Nolan by default. At No. 2 singles, Annzley Francis won 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 3 singles match, Kailyn Frosch defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Over in doubles play, the No. 1 team of Victoria Sheffer and Sabina Hernandez Lobato won 6-1, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team featuring Quinn Ortiz and Holly Lanius won by default. Also winning was No. 3 doubles, Cassidi Mapps and Samara Williams, by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 and No. 4 doubles, Olivia Kunzer and Emily Butterbaugh, by default.

In league play, the Hornets came up short against Onsted. No. 1 singles junior Abigail Nolan played her matches with final scores of 6-1, 4-6 and 10-3. No. 3 singles freshman Kailyn Frosch won her matches in 6-2 and 6-3 finals.

Hillsdale closed out its tennis matches for the week with a 5-3 win over Lansing Christian. In singles play, No. 1 singles competitor Abigail Nolan won 6-3 and 6-1. Annzley Francis won 6-4 and 6-2 in No. 2 singles. In doubles play, Victoria Sheffer and Sabina Hernandez-Lobato got the win with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Quinn Ortiz and Ava Olmstead won their matches 7-4 and 6-4 to get the W. The No. 4 doubles team of Olivia Kuenzer and Emily Butterbaugh won their match with final scores of 7-6 (12-10), 1-6 (loss) and 12-10.

Over on the golf course, the Hornet boys golf team had an equally impressive start to its week, beating Concord and Homer in a trio matchup at Concord. The Hornets took first place in a nine-hole jamboree with a final score of 199. Joseph Miller and Jaden Hall led the way for Hillsdale with a score of 45. Brahm Gambill shot a 51 and Collin Mullaly had a score of 58. Hall and Miller tied for first in individual leader scores.

The team then traveled to its first LCAA jamboree of the season at Dundee. The team played through nine holes, finishing in eighth place with a score of 193. The event was won by Clinton with a score of 173. Blissfield and Dundee tied for second with scores of 177.

Individually, senior Joseph Miller had a standout day for Hillsdale, posting a fourth place finish with a score of 41. Miller had a total of five pars on the day. Junior Lucas Dopp of Adrian Madison took first with a score of 37, finishing just one over par. He had two birdies.

Hillsdale golf will wait until Friday, May 3 for its next LCAA jamboree, this time at the Whiteford Valley Golf Club. Hillsdale tennis has three matchups this week, starting Monday against Columbia Central.
