Live updates: 6 tornadoes reported in Kentucky. Light snow follows severe storms

Severe storms in Kentucky Thursday brought at least six tornadoes around the state, along with heavy rain. The storms led to power outages, and some building damage.

The National Weather Service has confirmed tornadoes in Grant, Henry, Boyle, Ballard, Madison and Mercer counties.

The storms started in Western Kentucky early Thursday morning, moving into Central Kentucky later in the morning and progressing into Eastern Kentucky too.

Following the severe storms, forecasters are expecting light snowfall across the state Friday.

Here’s the latest information on the severe weather.

6 tornadoes reported in Kentucky

12:30 p.m. - The National Weather Service has reported six tornadoes touched down in Kentucky Thursday. The most recent preliminary tornado report was in Madison County. The National Weather Service said in a tweet Friday that an EF-1 tornado hit the county with wind speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

Another tornado was also confirmed in Ballard County, according to the NWS.

Snow expected to follow severe storms

9:45 a.m. - Snow flurries with light accumulations are expected to hit Kentucky Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-20s by Friday night.

4th KY tornado confirmed in Grant County

8 a.m. - The National Weather Service confirmed a fourth tornado in Kentucky Thursday, this one in Grant County. The NWS classified it as an EF-0 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 85 miles per hour.

Tornado confirmed in Henry County

January 13, 6:50 a.m. - An EF-1 tornado was confirmed in Henry County Thursday, according to the NWS. The tornado had maximum wind speeds of 110 miles per hour. It was the third tornado confirmed in Kentucky Thursday.

Tornado confirmed in Boyle County

3:11 p.m. — NWS surveyors have confirmed an EF-1 tornado went through Boyle County Thursday.

The tornado reached speeds up to 95 miles per hour, according to the NWS.

Surveyors are continuing work in Henry County. The NWS said it will also survey damage in Madison County.

Mercer County tornado leaves some homes damaged

2:45 p.m. - The tornado in Mercer County left extensive home damage for some residents. Heather Long, a local resident, said she was at work when the storm swept through and returned home to see the damage Thursday morning.

“My neighbor actually called me and wanted to make sure that we weren’t home because she was concerned because we also have two small children,” she said.

She returned home around 9:20 a.m. to find “pretty extensive” damage, she said.

“We’ve completely lost everything inside our garage,” she said. “We’re going to have to replace siding, we’re going to have to replace our roof, so it’s done quite a bit of damage.”

Long said it was “devastating to see,” but she was thankful no one was home at the time and said the community had already been very helpful.

Experts surveying damage in multiple Kentucky counties

2:30 p.m. - After storms hit most heavily in Madison, Mercer, Boyle and Henry counties, officials from the National Weather Service were surveying damage to determine if tornadoes hit those areas.

An EF-1 tornado with winds of 100 miles per hour was confirmed in Mercer County.

Power mostly restored in Mercer County

2 p.m. — According to poweroutages.us, only 115 customers in Mercer County are without power. More than 5,000 were initially without power when the storm hit.

Owen County is still reporting 1,346 outages, a number that’s stayed consistent in recent hours.

No injuries reported after local family education building gets damaged

1:15 p.m. — There are no injuries reported from the Mercer Area Family Education and Wellness building, according to the CEO and office manager Debrah Pierce.

About 25 people, including children were inside the building when the storm hit, according to Pierce. She said staff and children hid in a safe place, used sleeping mats to cover their heads and played games to keep the children calm.

“They were sequestered in a safe place and we had just gone over all of our emergency drills on Monday before this occurred Thursday,” Pierce said. “We were prepared.”

After the storm passed, the kids were transported away from the facility because it had no power. Pierce said the power was restored at approximately 12:15 p.m.

Pierce anticipates being closed Thursday and Monday until the roof is repaired. The roof is still intact but the covering of it was peeled back. She said when it heavily rains, it does leak down on the gym floor.

Severe thunderstorm watch expires in Fayette County

1 p.m. — The severe thunderstorm watch for Fayette County has expired, according to the NWS.

However, Fayette along with Boyle, Clark, Garrard, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Larue, Nelson, Washington, Casey, Grayson, Green, Hart, Lincoln, Marion, Taylor, Adair, Barren, Edmonson and Metcalfe counties are all under a flood advisory until 2:30 p.m, according to the NWS. Flooding can be expected in low-lying or poor drainage areas, the NWS said.

Parts of Eastern Kentucky go under a flash flood warning

12:41 p.m. — Estill, Jackson, Montgomery and Powell counties have all been issued a flash flood warning by the NWS.

A doppler radar spotted thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area, NWS said. Flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly, according to NWS.

The warning will remain in effect until at least 3:45 p.m., NWS said.

NWS: 100 mile per hour tornado hit Harrodsburg

12:19 p.m. — The NWS’ preliminary investigation into the damage in Mercer County determined a small tornado hit the area.

According to the NWS, the twister was an EF1 that reached 100 miles per hour in west Harrodsburg. The survey of the damage is still on going.

Marion, Taylor, Washington counties under flash flood warning

11:55 a.m. — Marion, Taylor and Washington counties are all under a flash flood warning until at least 2:45 p.m., according to the NWS.

At 11:35 a.m. a doppler radar spotted thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area, NWS said. Flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly, according to NWS.

Storm scatters debris across West Main in Richmond

11:45 a.m. — West Main Street in Richmond was briefly shut down after a powerful thunderstorm left debris scattered across the road, according to Richmond police.

The road reopened just before 11:15 a.m., according to police.

Traffic lights out, building damaged in Mercer County

10:40 a.m. — Mercer County was among the hardest hit counties from Thursday’s severe thunderstorms.

Most of the city’s intersections were without power and officers were directing traffic, according to the Harrodsburg Police Department.

Due to damage from the storm, kids from the Mercer Area Family Education and Wellness building were taken to the gymnasium at Mercer County High School, according to police.

At one point Thursday morning, part of the roof of the MAFEW building peeled back, according to officials.

The local police department said Kentucky Utilities had been notified of power outages, and schools were ok although they had suffered power losses.

Harrodsburg police also said there was a false report of children trapped at a daycare, and there were no trapped children.

Nearly 4,000 Mercer County customers were without power just after 10:30 a.m., according to poweroutages.us.

Thousands without power in one KY county after storms

10:06 a.m. — Thousands of people in Mercer County are without power after a severe storm swept through the area Thursday morning.

According to poweroutages.us, a website that tracks outages across the United States, 4,451 Mercer County customers are without power. That figure was above 5,000 at one point Thursday morning.

Smaller numbers of outages were also reported in Anderson, Boyle, Jessamine, Madison, Marion and Washington counties.

Madison County, Clark County no longer under tornado warning

10 a.m. — There are no longer any tornado warnings in Central Kentucky as the storm moves farther east, according to the NWS.

Most of the area is still under a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 p.m., according to the NWS. Northern Nicholas County is in a severe thunderstorm warning until at least 10:30 a.m., the NWS said.

Severe thunderstorm warning ends for Fayette County

9:55 a.m. — Fayette County and most other counties in Central Kentucky are out of the severe thunderstorm warning, according to the NWS.

A severe thunderstorm watch is still in effect in the area until at least 1 p.m., the NWS said.

Tornado warning extended in Madison County

9:42 a.m. - The tornado warning issued for Madison County has been extended to at least 10:15 a.m., according to the NWS.

The warning also included southeastern Clark County, the NWS said. The storm will be near Harris Ferry around 9:50 a.m., according to the NWS.

Several Eastern Ky. counties under severe thunderstorm watch

9:40 a.m. — As a severe thunderstorm sweeps its way across Kentucky, several counties in Eastern Kentucky are under a severe thunderstorm watch, according to the NWS.

Bath, Boyd, Bracken, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Greenup, Jackson, Johnson, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Lewis, Magoffin, Mason, McCreary, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Owsley, Powell, Pulaski, Robertson, Rockcastle, Rowan, Wayne, Whitley and Wolfe counties are all included in the watch, the NWS said. It will remain in effect until at least 4 p.m.

Fayette County out of tornado warning

9:26 a.m. — Fayette County is no longer in a tornado warning, according to the NWS.

However, Fayette and other Central Kentucky counties remain in a severe thunderstorm warning until at least 10 a.m., according to the NWS. Quarter-sized hail and 60 mile per hour winds are expected with the storm.

A tornado warning remains in effect for central Madison and northeastern Garrard counties until at least 9:45 a.m., according to the NWS.

Tornado warning issued for Fayette County

9:14 a.m. — The NWS issued a tornado warning for southeastern Fayette County, as well as Madison, Boyle, Jessamine, Clark, Garrard, Woodford and Mercer counties until 9:45 a.m. A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Danville at 9:13 a.m., heading east at 55 miles per hour.

Fayette County upgraded to a thunderstorm warning

9:10 a.m. - While all of Fayette County was under a thunderstorm watch Thursday morning, part of the county was upgraded to a warning just after 9 a.m., according to the NWS. The warning will be in effect until 10 a.m.

A severe thunderstorm was spotted near Lawrenceburg at 9:03 a.m., heading east at 60 miles per hour, the NWS said. Damage to roofs, siding and trees was expected.

Other Kentucky counties under a tornado warning

8:30 a.m. - Mercer, Woodford, Garrard, Jessamine, Washington and Boyle counties were placed under a tornado warning until at least 9:15 a.m., according to the NWS. A thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was spotted near Springfield at 8:48 a.m., heading east at 60 miles per hour.
