Recap: How the Kansas City Chiefs won the 2023 Super Bowl over Philadelphia Eagles

The NFL postseason has come down to this: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

Both teams went 14-3 in the regular season and emerged as the No. 1 seeds in their respective conferences. Sunday night’s game features two of the NFL’s top offenses — the Chiefs ranked No. 1, the Eagles No. 3.

And this matchup is loaded with star power: quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones for the Chiefs; quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receiver A.J. Brown and outside linebacker Haason Reddick for the Eagles. All of them were either first- or second-team All-Pro selections.

The Chiefs are looking for their third Super Bowl win in franchise history, while the Philadelphia Eagles seek their second.

FINAL SCORE: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35

KC opens the final quarter with a nice beeline pass down the middle for a first down. Two more throws to JuJu Smith-Schuster get Chiefs within 10 yards. Kadarius Toney scores and ties the game, then Butker gets in the field goal for the Chiefs’ first lead.

The Eagles don’t keep the ball for long, thanks to some Chiefs stops. Philly opts to punt.

A crazy punt return by Toney gets Chiefs more than 40 yards with a big win from the Chiefs’ special team, the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. Chiefs rookie Skyy Moore get it in on the 3rd down.

The Eagles are attempting to overcome an 8-point deficit with 9 minutes left in the game. They get a few first downs and a big throw to get in the red zone. Jalen Hurts gets another touchdown to bring Philly within 2.

Now it’s the Chiefs’ turn to try to get points fast. With 5 minutes remaining, Mahomes and the offense line up again. Another throw to JuJu Smith-Schuster leads to a first down. Isiah Pacheco goes on short run and takes a big hit.

Travis Kelce gets another catch to get the Chiefs to 3rd and 1, then he goes to the sideline. Isiah Pacheco, back in, takes it the rest of the way for a first down. Mahomes has another big run to put the Chiefs within 20 yards with 2 minutes to go.

The Chiefs get a fresh set of downs for a roughing the passer call. Jerick McKinnon gets KC within a yard. The Chiefs are burning the clock, and the game now has less than a minute.

KC kicks a field goal with 8 seconds remaining, taking the lead. The Eagles fail to score.

Third quarter: Eagles 27, Chiefs 21

The Chiefs open the second half with some strong plays, including impressive throws to Isiah Pacheco, Skyy Moore, Jaylen Watson and Travis Kelce.

Then Mahomes runs for nearly 20 yards to get in the red zone. A pass to Jerick McKinnon put KC within 1 yard. Pacheco brings it home to narrow the gap.

After an Eagles running back catches the ball, the Chiefs defense pulls out another scoop and score that is then overturned. The Chiefs defense makes some good stops around the 40-yard line. A big throw to Dallas Goedert right at the sideline is challenged by the Chiefs, and they lose a timeout.

Chiefs force another fourth down, but the Eagles convert again.

From there, the Chiefs hold the Eagles to no gain for three downs, and Philadelphia gets in a field goal.

On the Chiefs’ next drive, they get a few short gains with throws to Kelce and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Isiah Pacheco two back-to-back runs to get a first down.

Patrick Mahomes returns for second half

Patrick Mahomes appeared to again hurt his ankle, in the second quarter. But he came out of the locker room after halftime, jogged across the field and is warming up with the team.

Second quarter: Eagles 24, Chiefs 14

Philadelphia scores seconds in the second quarter with a long pass to A.J. Brown. Trent McDuffie is close to an interception, but just misses it. The extra point goes through.

The Chiefs are quickly forced to punt, and the Eagles get the ball on their 30-yard line.

A missed call over an interaction between the Chiefs’ JuJu Smith-Schuster and the Eagles’ James Bradberry riled up KC fans.

As the Chiefs rush Hurts, he throws a 9-yard pass to Zach Pascal for a first down.

A fumble by the Eagles gives the Chiefs a shocking defensive scoop and score by linebacker and Mizzou alum Nick Bolton.

Philadelphia gets a first down once again to start its next drive, and the KC defense pats down a deep pass. After a couple more short plays, the Eagles opt go for it on the fourth down, and Hurts runs 28 yards.

The Eagles get back in the red zone, and as they set up for a fourth down, the Chiefs get a neutral zone infraction. Jalen Hurts gets another rushing touchdown. Extra point is good.

An attempt to go deep by Patrick Mahomes falls short, and the Chiefs are called for a false start.

Patrick Mahomes is grabbed by an Eagles defender, and goes off the field with apparent pain in his ankle. He’s being worked on on the sideline. The Chiefs punt.

The Eagles make another deep pass from Jalen Hurts to Smith to make it to the 35-yard line.

An Eagles throw is the subject of a drawn-out review, as the referees try to decide if the ball was caught or dropped on the sideline. The Chiefs win the review, and it does not count.

The Eagles get off a series of passes, then opt to try for a field goal.

First quarter: Eagles 7, Chiefs 7

The Eagles will start the game on their own 25-yard line after Harrison Butker kicks it into the end zone. The first two plays only result in short gains for Philadelphia. Eagles get a first down with a pass to DeVonta Smith. Two more quickly follow, and Philadelphia makes it into the red zone.

Kenneth Gainwell comes just short of the goal line, and Philadelphia gets on the 1-yard line for a first down. Jalen Hurts scores a touchdown with a quarterback sneak.

The score puts the Chiefs behind for the first time in the 2023 playoffs.

The Chiefs get off to a quick start on their next drive with a 20-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce, then an 8 -yard run by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Then comes a 24-yard run by Isiah Pacheco and a touchdown pass to Kelce. Harrison Butker gets the extra point.

The pass also puts Patrick Mahomes in the NFL’s top 10 in career passing yards.

The Eagles get the ball back, and a passer interference penalty is called on the Eagles. The Chiefs are getting quick tackles from Leo Chenal and L’Jarius Sneed. KC’s defensive pressure forces Philly to punt, and Kadarius Toney gets a short run out of it.

The next Chiefs pass goes to backup tight end Noah Gray, and a penalty on the Eagles gives the Chiefs another first down. Another throw from Mahomes to Kelce puts the Chiefs at the 30. KC attempts a field goal, and it goes off the post.

The Eagles’ next drive starts with a short run by Hurts. Chiefs continue to put up the defensive pressure.



And we’re off!

The Chiefs win the coin toss and choose to receive in the second half. Jason and Travis Kelce hugged each other as they become the first brothers to play one another in the Super Bowl.

Chiefs injury report

The Chiefs have a relatively healthy roster for Sunday’s showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee) is active for the game and should assume a normal workload.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, the players that could make a difference include: QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, RT Andrew Wylie, DE Frank Clark and K Harrison Butker.

Who is refereeing the Super Bowl?

The NFL chose Carl Cheffers as the referee for Super Bowl LVII. Cheffers worked Super Bowl LV, when the Chiefs lost 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Chiefs fans have been worried about the matchup, remembering previous controversial calls. There’s also a concern that Cheffers will call too many penalties.

How many times have Chiefs been in the Super Bowl? And Eagles?

Philadelphia and Kansas City have never before faced each other in the postseason. But both have played in past Super Bowls.

It’s Kansas City’s fifth time in the Super Bowl. With a win today, the Chiefs would become the 10th franchise to win at least three Super Bowls, joining two AFC West rivals: the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.

  • Super Bowl I, 1967: Chiefs lose to Green Bay Packers, 35-10.

  • Super Bowl IV, 1970: Chiefs win vs. Minnesota Vikings, 23-7
