Game highlights: Kansas City Chiefs beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-10 in Christmas Eve game

The Chiefs are home for the first time since Week 12 to welcome the Seattle Seahawks to a freezing GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday.

The Chiefs (11-3) and Seahawks (7-7), former AFC West foes, have met 52 times in the regular season, and the Chiefs hold a 33-19 edge in their all-time series. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is 1-1 against Seattle since arriving in Kansas City and the Seahawks won the most recent installment in 2018.

As for the present, today’s game presents a dangerous matchup for the Chiefs, who clinched the AFC West last week.

Unlike the Chiefs’ recent two games against the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans, the Pete Carroll-led Seahawks are in the thick of NFC playoff chase and need a win to stay alive.

Fourth-quarter score: Chiefs 24, Seahawks 3

To start the final quarter, the Seahawks go for it on 4th and eight, but fail — the third time Chiefs defense has shut them down on a fourth down attempt. But the Chiefs have to punt again, their fourth three and out of the game.

Seattle converts on 3rd down and 11 at Kansas City’s 32-yard line. Juan Thornhill intercepts a Seahawks ball in their end zone.

Kelce catches a Mahomes ball, his 800th career interception. And Kelce makes another catch, running the ball all the way to first and goal. Patrick Mahomes dives for a Kansas City touchdown. PAT is good, and it’s 24-3 Chiefs.

Seattle gets their first touchdown with 2:24 left in the game. The Seahawks make their extra point, and it’s 24-10 Chiefs.

Third quarter

Seattle opens the second half, but can’t convert. But neither can the Chiefs — Justin Watson drops the ball, then Kelce, and Townsend punts. Kevin Walker gets back-to-back first downs for the Seahawks. Seattle goes for it on a 4th and one, and it pays off, pulling out another first down. They go for it again on a 4th and four, but Chiefs defense shuts them down, and it’s Kansas City football.

Mahomes to Smith-Schuster picks up a first down at the 46-yard line. Mahomes is sacked by Seattle’s Derek Taylor on the next down. Chiefs punt with 4:31 left in the third quarter.

Seattle’s Walker gets another 20-yard run to round out a scoreless quarter.

Patrick Mahomes joins three NFL legends by reaching two big statistical marks

Patrick Mahomes continues to cement his place as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. During today’s game, Mahomes surpassed 4,500 passing yards on the season — the fourth time in Mahomes’ five seasons as the Chiefs starter that he has reached 4,500 passing yards or more and 35 or more touchdown throws.

The Chiefs noted only three players in NFL history have reached those statistical plateaus four times in a season. The others are Tom Brady (five times), Drew Brees (four times) and Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (four times).

Second quarter

The Seahawks start the second quarter at the 16th yard line. Karlaftis sacks Geno Smith, and Seattle punts. The Seahawks have 18 net yards and zero first downs in four drives.

Mahomes to Travis Kelce for a first down. And again — Mahomes to Kelce — a long touch pass for another first down as the Chiefs close in on the red zone. And to McKinnon, who twists his way through a few Seahawks for another Kansas City touchdown. PAT is good, Chiefs are 14-0 with 8:56 left in the second quarter. That’s McKinnon’s sixth touchdown over the past four games.

Seattle makes their first first down of the game. But they can’t take it further thanks to an iron Chiefs defense, and they punt. Mahomes makes a short pass to Pacheco, who just keeps running it to the 33rd yard line for a KC first down. Butker — whose been flawless so far today — makes a 47-yard field goal, and it’s 17-0 Chiefs with 2:40 left in the half.

Seattle’s DK Metcalf makes a long catch for a Seahawks first down. The Chiefs are having some penalty issues, and it’s first and goal Seattle. They take a field goal, bringing it 17-3 to close out the half.

First quarter

Seattle wins the toss and elects to defer, handing KC the first reins. JuJu Smith-Schuster fails to catch a low Patrick Mahomes throw on the Chiefs’ first third down, forcing a punt. Seattle catches the 57-yard ball from Tommy Townsend back at the seven yard line. But the Seahawks can’t convert, and it’s Chiefs football again.

Isiah Pacheco runs for a Kansas City first down, their first of the game. Mahomes to Jerick McKinnon for another first down. Another pass to Sky Moore, a short run from Pacheco and a first down. KC offense is up and rolling. Mahomes runs it out of bounds near the seven yard line. And the scoreboard is on — Kadarius Toney takes a flip from Mahomes to run it in for a Chiefs touchdown, helped along with an expert block by Trey Smith. And Harrison Butker makes the extra point. Chiefs lead 7-0.

Seattle runs it across mid-field in their return (their longest return of the season), putting the Seahawks in a good field position. Seahawks go for it on the 4th and three, but this KC defense is tight, and George Karlaftis bats it down.

Mahomes attempts a long throw to Justin Watson, who runs to the end zone, but the pass is incomplete. Tommy Townsend punts a short kick, and the Seahawks will start at their 20-yard line with 2:40 left in the quarter. They can’t convert, and it’s back to Kansas City. Watson fumbles on a third down — it’s cold, remember — and Townsend’s out again.
