Silver medals for Peoria County athletes

Isaiah Hill of Elmwood and Hank Alvey of Illini Bluffs each grabbed a couple of silvers in the Class 1A meet.

Hill ran 1:53.82 to finish second to champion Josiah Hortin of Tuscola (1:51.98). Both compete later in the 1600 run.

Alvey led the 1A discus after prelims with a throw of 160-10. But the Lehigh basketball recruit was edged by Heyworth's Nick Feather on his final throw of 163-7.

IHSA records: Pole vault record falls for second straight week

Isaiah Whitaker of Bloomington Central Catholic broke his own Class 1A pole vault state record, winning gold with a vault of 17 feet (5.18 meters). Whitaker's previous mark of 5.10 meters was set last season.

Last week, Elmwood/Brimfield's Mya Strahm — recently named the Journal Star's girls track and field athlete of the year — set the all-class pole vault mark in winning her Class 1A title. The Tennessee recruit cleared 14-1.25 to win her second successive 1A title.

IHSA records: Discus record falls in Class 2A

Monticello senior Demarion Forman set the Class 2A discus state mark, winning gold with a throw of 193 feet, 11 inches (59.12 meters). The throw eclipsed by nearly 2 meters the 10-year-old previous mark of 57.4 set by Ryan Njegovan of Sandwich in 2013.

Metamora athlete brings home multiple medals in Class 2A

Metamora junior Nick Walker made the finals in the Class 2A long jump and high jump, bringing home medals in both.

Walker finished ninth in the long jump, leaping 21 feet, 8.75 inches. His jump of 6-2.5 was good for eighth in the high jump.

Christopher McCaleb of Deer Creek-Mackinaw outpaced one other athlete to win the wheelchair shot put state championship. McCaleb won with a distance of 5.96 meters, topping his own record set last season.

McCaleb then won the wheelchair discus title with a throw of 14.05 meters.
