Live updates: Dolphins make roster moves, lose 2 draft picks. Grier talks; Taylor fallout

We’re doing another live Dolphins blog at The Miami Herald today because of a flurry of moves expected. Today, please check at the bottom for live updates, including quick hits from Chris Grier’s 2 p.m. news conference:

1). The Dolphins are expected to move Jalen Ramsey and Elijah Campbell - and possibly Robert Jones - to injured reserve with a designation to return this season. That would allow the team to create openings on their 50 man roster.

On Tuesday, the Dolphins made two players practice who they then released: tight end Tyler Kroft and cornerback Parry Nickerson. Considering the Dolphins aren’t known as particularly ruthless, it would seem that one or both of those players could be re-signed when Ramsey, Campbell and perhaps Jones are shifted to IR.

[Update: The Dolphins have re-signed Nickerson, as Jordan Schultz reported. They also re-signed Kroft. And Miami claimed nobody waived by another team].

2). A source confirmed Stephen Holder’s ESPN report that the Packers were the mystery bidder for Jonathan Taylor.

As we reported over the past week, the Dolphins and Colts discussed several permutations involving players and draft picks. But a trade never got close because the Colts kept asking for more and more, including receiver Jaylen Waddle, as Indy media reported and a team source confirmed.

Miami never considered the trade request for Waddle.

No team offered a first-round pick for Taylor, who can still be traded anytime before Nov. 1. But Taylor is ineligible to play for any team until Game 5 because he’s on PUP.

3). The Dolphins are expected to put together a 16-player practice squad with safety Ethan Bonner, receiver Braylon Sanders, multiple front-seven defenders who were cut by the team (including Cameron Goode) and some players from other organizations. Six players on the practice squad can be experienced veterans.

LIVE BLOG

12:10 p.m.: The Dolphins are re-signing Nickerson, who had an impressive two weeks of camp. That gives them a cornerback room of Xavien Howard, Kader Kohou, Cam Smith, Kelvin Joseph, Eli Apple and Nickerson.

Ramsey and Nik Needham (PUP) are healing from surgeries.

12:45 p.m.: The Dolphins lost two of their 2023 draft picks on Wednesday, when sixth-round tight end Elijah Higgins and seventh-round offensive lineman Ryan Hayes were claimed by other teams.

Arizona claimed Higgins, who was transitioning from Stanford tight end to NFL receiver. Indianapolis claimed Hayes, who had some good moments in camp after a solid career at Michigan.

Miami hoped to move both players to their practice squad but that plan was torpedoed.

The Dolphins claimed no players who were waived by other teams.

1:15 p.m.: The Dolphins have begun signing players to the practice squad, including center Alama Uluave, receiver Braylon Sanders and edge player Cameron Goode.

1:30 p.m.: Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, asked the reasons why they weren’t more aggressive in pursuing Dalvin Cook or Jonathan Taylor: “We felt good about the roster we have. When you build a team you look longterm and short. We are always aggressive but always going to be mindful - salary cap related.”..

He said he believes this roster is good enough to compete with Kansas City, Cincinnati, Buffalo...

Grier said there won’t be contract talks with Tua Tagovailoa this season. Miami could revisit the idea of a longterm contract next offseason; the Dolphins previously picked up his $22 million 2024 option, but that could be replaced by a longterm deal.

Grier confirmed he had conversations with the Colts about Jonathan Taylor. He said he in general, he wouldn’t trade Waddle...

Grier said he made an “offer” to Christian Wilkins but those talks will be tabled until the end of the season. He can be a free agent in March, though the team can put the franchise tag on him...

Elijah Campbell will stay on the active roster even though he’s injured, Grier said... So Rob Jones and Jalen Ramsey are heading to IR... Grier said Keion Crossen on Tuesday suffered “freak injury and is out for the year.”...

Tanner Conner is sticking around on the Dolphins’ practice squad, Grier said. There’s no decision on Robbie Chosen...

He said cornerback Kelvin Joseph, acquired from Dallas for Noah Igbinoghene, fills the Dolphins’ need for “another nickel player. Kelvin can play inside or out.”

3:15 p.m.: Besides center Alama Uluave, receiver Braylon Sanders, tight end Tanner Conner, safety Ethan Bonner and edge player Cameron Goode, the Dolphins announced three other practice squad signings: defensive end Randy Charlton, defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, linebacker AJ Johnson.

3:30 p.m.: Tyreek Hill was not spotted at practice, but his absence is excused and there’s nothing to worry about... De’Von Achane (shoulder) was in a red non-contact jersey... Terron Armstead, Liam Eichenberg, Robert Jones, Salvon Ahmed, Jeff Wilson, Elijah Campbell and of course, Jalen Ramsey were sidelined with injuries.

3:45 p.m.: The Dolphins are signing former Patriots guard Chasen Hines to their practice squad, his agent told sportswriter Doug Kyed.

Hines was a Patriots sixth round pick out of LSU in 2022. He spent much of last year on injured reserve. He played 111 snaps at left guard in preseason and permitted two sacks, per PFF.

4 p.m.: The Dolphins re-signed tight end Tyler Kroft, as expected. Parry Nickerson and Kroft likely will fill the roster spots on the 53 that will be created when Miami moves Jalen Ramsey and Robert Jones to injured reserve.

4:15 p.m.: The Dolphins added veteran safety Joshua Kalu to their practice squad; he was cut by Washington this week. He appeared in 44 games with five starts for the Tennessee Titans; he had 68 tackles and two forced fumbles and one interception. He’s the 10th confirmed addition to the Dolphins’ practice squad.
