Live updates: Dallas Cowboys fall to Tampa Bay Bucs 19-3 in opener as Dak Prescott hurt

Dallas falls short against Tampa Bay

The Cowboys scored on their opening possession, but failed to score a point on the next 10 as they dropped their season opener 19-3 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott injured his right hand late in the fourth quarter.

Prescott leaves with injury

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott exited the game with an apparent injury to his right hand with less than six minutes remaining. Cooper Rush replaced him as Dallas tried to cut into a 19-3 Bucs lead.

Wilson picks off Tom Brady

The Dallas Cowboys still have life against the Bucs after Donovan Wilson intercepted Tom Brady near midfield with 12:01 remaining in the game.

Cowboys trail entering fourth quarter

Dallas will start the quarter with the ball at the Tampa 45 on second down. Cowboys fans booed the offense after an errant pass from Dak Prescott at the end of the third quarter. Offensive tackle Terence Steele has committed three penalties on the drive, including two false start calls.

Bucs take commanding lead

The Buccaneers finally got into the end zone near the end of the third quarter. Tom Brady connected with Mike Evans for a 5-yard touchdown pass to move Tampa Bay ahead 19-3 with 3:23 left in the third quarter. Bucs kicker Ryan Succop had connected on four field goals in the first to give them a 12-3 halftime lead.

Godwin, Smith ruled out

Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin injured his hamstring and was ruled out for the remainder of the game in the third quarter. He had three receptions for 35 yards in his first game back after tearing his ACL and MCL in December.

Tampa Bay left tackle Donovan Smith was also ruled out with an elbow injury.

McGovern ruled out

Starting guard Connor McGovern was ruled out for the remainder of the game at the start of the third quarter. McGovern injured his ankle on the Cowboys’ first possession.

Tampa Bay leads at the half

The Bucs hold a 12-3 lead over the Cowboys at halftime of Sunday night’s game. Tom Brady has led the Bucs to scores on four of their first five possessions. The other resulted in a missed field goal.

Brady was 11-of-16 for 160 yards while Dak Prescott struggled mightily. Prescott threw one interception and was just 6-of-16 for 53 yards in the first half.

The Cowboys mustered only 94 total yards in the first half along with five first downs, while the Bucs had 219 total yards and 10 first downs.

Bucs add onto lead before halftime

A 48-yard completion to Julio Jones set up another scoring opportunity for the Bucs. The Cowboys forced another field goal attempt after the completion.

Ryan Succop hit his fourth field of the game to put Tampa Bay ahead 12-3 with just 14 seconds before halftime.

Prescott interception costs Dallas

The Cowboys were unable to capitalize on Tampa Bay’s missed field goal as Dak Prescott was picked off by Antoine Winfield. Winfield returned it to the Dallas 23.

Tampa was forced to settle for another field goal attempt as Micah Parsons sacked Tom Brady for a second time on third-and-goal. Ryan Succop hit a 29-yard field goal to make it 9-3 with 3:25 left before halftime.

Parsons gets first sack of the year

In what could be the first of many, Micah Parsons came up with his first sack of the year in timely fashion. Tampa Bay was driving for a potential touchdown when Parsons sacked Tom Brady for a 10 yard loss on third down.

Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith was injured on the play.

Ryan Succop missed the 36-yard field goal attempt after Parsons’ big play.

First quarter ends, Bucs lead 6-3

Dallas will have the ball to start second quarter. Third down at their 6.

Bucs take the lead

The Buccaneers found more success on their second drive as Tom Brady led them to another score. Ryan Succop knocked in a 38-yard field goal to put Tampa Bay ahead 6-3 with 1:06 left in the first quarter.

McGovern questionable to return

Starting guard Connor McGovern suffered an ankle injury on the Cowboys’ opening drive. His return is questionable.

Tampa gets on the board

The Buccaneers responded to the Cowboys field goal with one of their own as Ryan Succop hit a 41-yarder with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter. Tom Brady connected on two passes for 44 yards to set up the score.

Cowboys strike first

The Dallas Cowboys marched down the field on the opening drive of the game and got on the scoreboard first. Brent Maher hit a 51-yard field goal to put the Cowboys ahead 3-0 with 9:02 remaining in the first quarter.

Starting guard Connor McGovern had to exit the game with an ankle injury on the Dallas Cowboys’ first drive against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Matt Farniok filled in for him.
