Early signing day: Boise State inks 22 recruits, including a QB from Rancho Cucamonga

A successful early signing day has come and gone for the Boise State football team.

The Broncos signed all 22 of the verbally committed recruits in their 2023 class on Wednesday, including quarterback CJ Tiller and transfers Titus Toler (Wisconsin) and Chase Penry (Colorado).

One of the Broncos’ recruits, defensive lineman Max Stege, signed his national letter of intent at 7 a.m. in Germany, which was 11 p.m. Tuesday in Boise. Tight end Cayden Dawson, a three-star recruit from California, was the final player to file his NLI on Wednesday.

DL Max Stege, 6-5, 250, Cologne Crocodiles, Germany

Boise State discovered Stege while he was in the United States touring colleges with PPI Recruits, a recruiting service run by former Massachusetts defensive lineman Brandon Collier. He brings a select group of players to the U.S. every summer in an event that has been dubbed the Dreamchasers Tour. Stege didn’t have a rating on 247Sports when he committed in September, but he has since earned an 84, which makes him a three-star recruit.

WR Jackson Grier, 6-0, 175, St. Thomas Aquinas High, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Grier verbally committed to Boise State after visiting the campus in June. He comes from a football family. His father, Chris, has been the general manager for the Miami Dolphins since 2016. His grandfather, Bobby, worked in player personnel for the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.

Grier wasn’t rated on 247Sports when he committed, but he has since earned a 79, which makes him a two-star recruit. He is a three-star using 247Sports composite system, which takes an average of all the major ratings services. He helped St. Thomas Aquinas go 14-1 and win its third straight 7A state championship in 2021, but he missed this season because of a knee injury.

CB Franklyn Johnson Jr., 5-11, 175, Little Elm (Texas) High

Johnson started his high school career as a quarterback, but he bounced around between wide receiver, safety and cornerback. He was the first defensive back to join the class, and he’ll play cornerback at Boise State. Little Elm has earned a reputation among college football recruiters as a defensive back factory. Ryan Watts (Ohio State/Texas), Terrance Brooks (Texas), Brandon Crossley (SMU) and Keyshon Mills (Colorado) all played for the Lobos in recent years

CB Nick Hawthorne, 6-2, 175, Boswell (Texas) High

Hawthorne, a three-star recruit, joined the class in November. He has posted nine interceptions and 41 pass breakups the past three seasons at Boswell, according to MaxPreps.

TE Matt Wagner, 6-5, 230, Rock Hill High, Prosper, Texas

Wagner committed to Boise State on Tuesday, a day after he decomitted from North Texas. He began his high school career as a quarterback but transitioned to tight end as a sophomore. He posted 47 catches for 592 yards and five touchdowns this season.

Other offers: North Texas, Tulane, Georgetown, Lamar, Southeast Missouri State, Stetson.

RB Jambres “Breezy” Dubar, 6-0, 200, Anna (Texas) High

When he was at Washington, Boise State running backs coach Keith Bhonapha was recruiting Dubar, and he offered the explosive back a scholarship as soon as he was hired here. Dubar verbally committed in June.

Dubar has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons at Anna. He posted 1,619 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground and added four receiving touchdowns this season. He racked up 1,193 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in 2021.

Dubar earned high praise from 247Sports national recruiting editor Brandon Huffman this week.

“This might be the most talented running back Boise State has brought in, in the last 10 or 15 years,” Huffman told the Statesman. “He’s a guy I expect will get some snaps early in his career.”

Edge Demanuel Brown, 6-4, 230, Dekaney High, Houston, Texas

Brown, a three-star recruit, committed in November. He played defensive end and tight end at Dekaney High. Brown posted a team-high 12 sacks this season, in addition to 60 tackles. He finished his junior season with 46 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

S Titus Toler, 5-11, 195, Wisconsin, Long Beach, California

Toler committed on Monday after he spent three seasons at Wisconsin. He has three years of eligibility remaining. Toler was a four-star recruit coming out of St. John Bosco. He appeared in just seven games at Wisconsin because of injuries. He recorded the first interception of his college career in 2020.

WR Chase Penry, 6-1, 190, Colorado, Greenwood Village, Colorado

Penry joined the Broncos’ class on Tuesday after he spent the past two seasons at Colorado. He played in 11 games and started three as a freshman, and caught the first touchdown of his career. He appeared in just four games this year because of an injury. Penry had a productive high school career. He helped Cherry Creek win two state championships, and his 159 career catches rank No. 10 in Colorado high school history.

QB CJ Tiller, 6-3, 200, Rancho Cucamonga (California) High

Tiller was the first player to join the class when he committed in March. The three-star recruit spent the first three years of his high school career at Williams Field in Arizona. He posted 2,458 passing yards and 27 touchdowns in 11 games in the 2021 season. This year he transferred to Rancho Cucamonga in California and led the team to a 9-3 record. He racked up 2,154 yards and 14 touchdowns, according to MaxPreps.

LB Wyatt Milkovic, 6-1, 233, Basha High, Chandler, Arizona

Milkovic was the second player to join the class when he committed in April. The three-star recruit is a tackling machine. Playing middle linebacker, he led Basha with 144 tackles and added four sacks this season. He led the team with 132 tackles in the 2021 season.

OT Carson Rasmussen, 6-5, 300, Owyhee High (Meridian)

Rassmussen committed in November. He is the only high school player from Idaho in the class. The left tackle at recently opened Owyhee High School was named first-team 5A All-Idaho this season.

OL Jason Steele, 6-4, 280, Murrieta Valley (California) High

Steele, who committed in April, is coming out of the same high school that produced former Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier. Steele played tackle and center in high school. His older brother, Jake, is an offensive lineman at San Jose State. Steele, a three-star commit, said in April that he plans to graduate high school early and enroll at Boise State in January 2023.

DL Michael Madrie, 6-4, 260, Argyle (Texas) High

Madrie committed in August, becoming the first defensive lineman to join the class. He posted 78 tackles and seven sacks at Argyle this season. Madrie wasn’t rated by 247Sports, but he has since earned an 84, which makes him a three-star recruit.

TE Oliver Fisher, 6-5, 225, Sherwood (Oregon) High

Fisher, a three-star recruit, visited Boise State in June and he committed in July. He was the second tight end to join the class, following Dawson.

LB Chase Martin, 6-1, 205, Thousand Oaks (California) High

Martin joined the Broncos’ class on Monday. He starred on both sides of the ball at Thousand Oaks. On offense, he rushed for 1,017 yards and 19 touchdowns, and added five touchdown catches, according to MaxPreps. He tallied 131 tackles and 3.5 sacks on defense.

Other offers: Baylor, Washington State, UNLV, San Jose State, Fresno State, Central Michigan, Bryant, Ohio.

CB A’marion McCoy, 6-1, 170, Laney College, Atherton, California

McCoy, a transfer from Laney College in Oakland, California, is one of four players who announced they were joining the class on Monday. He posted 35 tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles in nine games.

Other offers: Fresno State, Murray State, Norfolk State, Morgan State.

DB Ty Benefield, 6-2, 185, Crean Lutheran, Rancho Santa Margarita, California

Benefield, a three-star recruit, played wide receiver and safety at Crean Lutheran. He caught 90 passes for 1,404 yards and 20 touchdowns and added two rushing touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. He also posted 91 tackles and four interceptions. Benefield said he expects to play safety at Boise State.

Other offers: BYU, Washington, Oregon State, Washington State, Colorado State, Stetson.

Versatile defensive back from California joins Boise State’s 2023 recruiting class

CB Gabe Tahir, 6-2, 180, Kamiakin High, Kennewick, Washington

Tahir joined Martin, McCoy and Toler in committing on Monday. The three-star recruit earned high praise from Huffman.

“He’s a guy who I’ve been high on since his freshman year,” Huffman told the Statesman on Monday. “He was a DB MVP at a camp at Oregon as a sophomore, and this is a guy who I think could end up being a sneaky star.”

OT Kyle Cox, 6-6, 270, Eatonville (Washington) High

Cox committed in June and became the second offensive lineman in the class, following Steele. The three-star recruit played left tackle at Eatonville this season.

CB Khai Taylor, 6-2, 174, Pittsburg (California) High

Taylor was committed to Nevada, but he flipped to Boise State in November just two days after reopening his recruitment. He played wide receiver and cornerback at Pittsburg. He caught 32 passes for 572 yards and seven touchdowns, and had 18 tackles and two pass breakups in 10 games.

Former Nevada commit becomes first defensive back in Boise State’s 2023 recruiting class

TE Cayden Dawson, 6-5, 232, University City High, San Diego, California

Dawson committed in July after visiting Boise State, Nevada and Oregon State. The three-star recruit caught 19 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns this season. He hauled in 13 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns in 2021. He also racked up 177 tackles and 25 sacks the past two seasons. He got to the quarterback 14 times as a senior.
