Game recap: Purdue football overcomes early struggles to beat IU 35-31 in Old Oaken Bucket

Coming into the Old Oaken Bucket, both Purdue and Indiana sit at 3-8 overall on the season.

The Boilermakers are 2-6 in Big Ten play while the Hoosiers are 1-7. Neither team will be in a bowl game this year, so it's the end of the line for both Purdue and IU after today.

Purdue beat IU 30-16 in 2022 and leads the series 76-42-6. The Boilermakers have won two in a row and four of the past five matchups.

That was an entertaining Old Oaken Bucket game, for sure. Hudson Card had a great game for Purdue, completing 21 of 34 pass attempts for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns. Card also led the team in rushing with 85 yards on 12 attempts and a score. Deion Burks caught 7 passes for 87 yards. On defense, Dillon Thieneman had 2 interceptions and 8 total tackles.

IU quarterback Brendan Sorsby completed 17 of 31 pass attempts for 226 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Sorsby also led the team in rushing with 54 yards on 12 attempts. E.J. Williams had 6 catches for 97 yards. Aaron Casey led Indiana with 11 total tackles.

Facing 4th and 1 at the Purdue 35-yard line, Nic Scourton got a good jump on the outside and forced Brendan Sorsby into an intentional grounding penalty. That will likely wrap this one up.

We're tied in the 4th quarter of the Old Oaken Bucket. Purdue went 52 yards in 11 plays to tie things up with a 35-yard field goal from Ben Freehill.

In the first play of the 4th quarter, Hudson Card faked a run, then tossed it up to Devin Mockobee, who was wide open. Mockobee's catch resulted in a 38-yard touchdown.

IU has a 10-point lead after a 9-yard touchdown pass from Brendan Sorsby to Josh Henderson. Earlier in the drive, Indiana was in punt formation but a Boilermaker defender jumped offsides to give the Hoosiers an automatic 1st down.

The Boilermakers closed the gap with a 44-yard field goal from Ben Freehill. That kick is a season-best for Freehill, whose previous season best was a 43 yarder.

So much for a slow Old Oaken Bucket game. Brendan Sorsby threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Donaven McCulley to extend IU's lead. The Hoosiers went 49 yards in 8 plays.
