The Little Mermaid confirms digital release date

Disney has confirmed the home release date for The Little Mermaid.

The live-action remake of the classic film will be available digitally on July 25, with a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD following on September 19.

Starring Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King, the musical fantasy film follows the story of Ariel (Bailey), a mermaid princess of underwater kingdom Atlantica. Curious about the human world, Ariel ventures to the surface of the ocean where she meets and falls in love with Prince Eric (Hauer-King).

However, Ariel's feelings for Eric and fascination with the human world soon place her and her father's kingdom in peril after she makes a deal with sea witch Ursula in order to experience life on land.

Melissa McCarthy stars as Ursula and Javier Bardem plays King Triton of Atlantica, while Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina voice Ariel's aquatic companions Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle.

The film has received largely favourable response from critics and fans since its release, sitting at 67% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, with viewers praising Bailey's portrayal of Ariel.

In its four-star review of the film, Digital Spy praised the actress' powerhouse performance, writing: "What makes this remake Disney's best, though, is undoubtedly Bailey's performance.

"Even without her voice, she's sheer magic and makes you feel every emotion Ariel is experiencing."
