'The Little Mermaid' is coming to life at Kentucky's Newport Aquarium with a new exhibit

If you happen to be a fan of "The Little Mermaid," or want your children to see a real-life fairytale, you don't have to go to Disney World to make it happen. An aquarium right here in the Bluegrass State is introducing an exhibit with similar themes.

The Newport Aquarium is introducing its new exhibit "Mermaids" on Memorial Weekend. From May 25 to June 23, "anyone questioning if mermaids are real will believe when they enter the Coral Reef Tunnel and find themswimming underwater with hundreds of tropical fish," according to a news release from the aquarium.

At the exhibit, visitors can expect to see mermaids swimming with stingrays in 60,000 gallons of salt water in Mermaid Cove. Guests will see mermaids laugh, wave, flip around and blow bubble kisses, as well as listen to her story, and join in a sing-along.

Rebecca Foster, executive director at Newport Aquarium, said the magic doesn't stop there. Visitors will also have a meet and greet with a mermaid in the Shark Bay Theater.

“As a mom, nothing compares to seeing the joy on your child’s face as they watch a fairytale unfold in frontof them. That’s what mermaids is all about,” Foster said. "These not-so-mythical creatures swim in from around the world. They’re excited to interact with humans to tell them all about how important it is to protect our planet’s waterways and share stories about their adventures."

Mother's Day: Don't forget!

Visitors will also get the opportunity to touch the stingrays and crawl through a tunnel to pop up in the middle of the pool for a mermaid's perspective and unique photo opportunity. The exhibit is included in general admission and memberships and runs everyday from May 25 to June 23 except Tuesday. Tickets can also be purchased in advance online for reduced prices.
