When the Detroit Lions acquired Jared Goff in a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams, it was unclear if he’d be the team’s long-term answer at quarterback or just a bridge option. Well, we finally received an answer to that question from Lions general manager Brad Holmes.

Holmes, who was in Los Angeles when the team drafted Goff, believes the former No. 1 pick will be a long-term option for Detroit.

“I never viewed him as a bridge option,” Holmes said, via the Lions’ official website. “He’s been a winning quarterback. I think his resume speaks for itself.”

Using a team’s record to judge a quarterback isn’t exactly fair, but there’s no denying that Goff has been a really productive player at times. During the 2018 season, he completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Last week, Holmes told the Detroit Free Press that Goff has a huge chip on his shoulder heading into the 2021 season. Perhaps that means we’ll see Goff play at a Pro Bowl level once again.

“He had a chip on his shoulder going into ’17 and then you see the last four years of how many games that he has won,” Holmes said. “Well, I think going into this year — not I think, I know going into this year, that chip is back from how things ended last year and I think Dan [Campbell] has done an incredible job managing basically the expectations of him, the ownership that he’s getting.”

Goff is coming off an inconsistent season with the Rams, but it sounds like he’s poised for a bounce-back year.

The Lions will begin the 2021 season at home against the San Francisco 49ers. It’ll be our first extended look at Goff in Anthony Lynn’s offense.
