Lin-Manuel Miranda features in Sen. Chuck Schumer campaign spot

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s political career may have reached great heights, but Lin-Manuel Miranda is still offering him a hand with his bid for a fifth term in the Senate.

Miranda, whose extravagant Broadway successes include “In the Heights” and “Hamilton,” appears in a campaign advertisement released this month by Schumer, a Brooklyn Democrat.

The ad touts Schumer’s work on behalf of New York’s theater industry during the pandemic, which dropped a curtain on Broadway that stayed down for 16 months.

“When COVID hit, we weren’t sure we’d ever be back,” Miranda, 42, says in the 30-second spot. “Then Chuck Schumer created the Save Our Stages program.”

In the depths of the first long COVID winter, Schumer helped secure some $15 billion for struggling arts venues as part of a $900 billion bipartisan pandemic relief package. Much of the $15 billion pot went to New York, Schumer’s office said.

In the Nov. 8 general election, Schumer faces Joe Pinion, a Republican political pundit from Yonkers. Schumer holds a wide lead, according to opinion polls.

The ad, filmed at New World Stages, ends with Schumer being shushed by another audience member as he says, “I approve this message — because in New York the show must go on.”
