Lily Gladstone's coming-of-age drama Fancy Dance has been snapped up by Apple TV+.

Having premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival, this movie marks the feature-length debut of writer-director Erica Tremblay and boasts a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tremblay herself commented on its acquisition: "Our film Fancy Dance has found the perfect home with Apple, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful story of two Seneca-Cayuga women with a global audience. As a Native American filmmaker, seeing my community included in the rich tapestry of cinema is a dream come true."

As for what it's all about, a synopsis for Fancy Dance reads: "Since her sister's disappearance, Jax (Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow.

"At the risk of losing custody to Jax's father, Frank (Shea Whigham), the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki's mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonised world and at the mercy of a failed justice system."

Gladstone is coming off the back of a history-making Golden Globes win last month, becoming the first-ever Indigenous performer to be honoured at the awards thanks to her role as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.

On March 10, she'll take on Emma Stone (for Poor Things), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Annette Bening (Nyad) in the Best Actress category at the Oscars.

Fancy Dance comes to cinemas and Apple TV+ later this year.
