Lightning strike kills soldier, injures nine others on Georgia base

A U.S. Army Reserve soldier was killed and another nine people were injured in a lightning strike at an Army post in Georgia, according to officials.

The incident unfolded around 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday at Fort Gordon, which is located in Richmond County, near Augusta.

A group of soldiers at the time were carrying out exercises in a field as thunder storms moved through the region. They all “sustained injuries associated with a lightning strike at one of their training areas,” according to a news release.

Fort Gordon’s Department of Emergency Services and Emergency Medical Services responded to the field immediately.

“It is with a heavy heart Fort Gordon confirms one of the soldiers in the lightning strike this afternoon succumbed to their injuries,” said Fort Gordon’s Deputy Public Affairs Officer Anne Bowman.

“No name will be released until the next of kin have been notified.”

The other soldiers were rushed to the Dwight David Eisenhower Medical Center at the base for treatment, WSB-TV reported. The extent of their injuries were not clear and their names have not been released.
