Two Of The Best NES Games Have Been Added To The Switch

Every month or so, Nintendo adds a few retro games to its Nintendo Switch Online retro gaming apps. We’ve seen plenty of Kirby games over the years since NSO launched, two of the best Zelda games, and a lot of smaller games from third parties. Today, Nintendo released three new games for the service, and two of them are some of the best NES games ever.
Nintendo both announced and released three games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers today — two for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and one for the Game Boy. The NES games are The Mysterious Murasame Castle and Devil World, and the Game Boy game is Castlevania Legends.
The Mysterious Murasame Castle is an excellent top-down adventure game, much like The Legend of Zelda, that was one of the earliest original games for the Famicom Disk System — a Japan-exclusive peripheral for the NES. The game remained exclusive to Japan all the way up until 2014, when it was released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console and received pretty good reviews for a NES game.
Devil World is another interesting piece of video game history, having been the first console game ever worked on by Shigeru Miyamoto. It’s a Pac-Man-style maze game with some truly fascinating game mechanics, but never saw a release in the US due to its religious imagery, despite having been released in both Japan and PAL regions.

The last game of the bunch is Castlevania Legends, and frankly it’s not very good. It was conceived as a prequel to the entire Castlevania series, and has some nice ideas, but was an absolute nightmare to play, especially compared to every other Castlevania game on the Game Boy, both before and after it. Still, if you’re a Castlevania mega-fan, it’s worth playing, if only to appreciate all of the other games in the series.
All three games are available now on Nintendo Switch for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
