We Tried to Guess How Often These Fitness Fanatics Eat Cheat Meals

WHEN YOU SIGN up for a weekend-long fitness festival, chances are you’ll feel like you're surrounded by a group of dedicated workout warriors who never even think of skipping leg day.

And to many casual observers, the fitness community can oftentimes be stereotyped as a bunch of joyless (and often shirtless) muscleheads who are content to live off of nothing but mounds of dry and dull chicken breasts and piles of spinach washed down with giant green smoothies in the pursuit of making gains. Dessert does not seem to exist in this world—only perfectly balanced macros.

So what happens when hundreds of wellness warriors gather to restaurant-rich New York City for a fitness convention? Is it possible to momentarily veer away from a veggie platter and indulge—for just one moment—and indulge some form of dietary decadence?

By using a highly unscientific method—three random questions ranging from fitness PRs, favorite protein source, even favorite lifts—MH correspondent Tony Xie hovered around Strong New York, a recent fitness convention which featured dozens of fitness professionals conducting seminars and hundreds of men and women perspiring and performing a wide range of challenging classes and competitions. His goal was to come with a guess as just how long ago each person's last cheat meal occurred. And of course, what type of meal it was.

And while New York City may be the Big Apple, the overwhelming culinary cheat was greasy New York City pizza. Consumption is what varied—from a slice or two to an entire pie.

Judging by most of the contestants replies, some of whom traveled in from locales as far as Costa Rica or as close as a 7 train from Queens to Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers, the results indicated that even the most dedicated fitness adherents are human and can’t resist the cheat meals. In fact, most caved to their cravings just before the event. Fit pros can live a little, too.
