This Trendy Brand Is Making Gelatin Cool Again
Gelatin-based treats have long been relegated to hospital rooms and college parties, but they’re currently in the middle of a renaissance. Elaborate molded treats are now show-stopping centerpieces. Jello shots have been elevated with decorative designs and upscale spirits. But the options for the gelatin itself have remained limited—until now.
A new brand of gelatin treats has just hit the market, and it’s a lot more chic than the neon-tinted ones we grew up eating. Gelée reimagines the sweet, jiggly desserts and gives them a grown-up upgrade—they use non-GMO gelatin, apple cider vinegar, Celtic sea salt, and real fruit powders. And, thanks to the use of stevia and allulose, Gelée has zero grams of sugar.
The instructions are super simple, just like making any treat with powdered gelatin. All you need to do dissolve each pouch in six ounces of hot water, transfer it to the mold of your choice, and let it set in the fridge for two hours.
Each flavor uses tropical fruits as the primary flavor, and it tastes a lot more natural and refreshing than the gelatin I’m used to eating. Let me be clear—there’s still definitely a time and place for the artificially flavored version. There is, however, a lot more versatility with Gelée.
It can be enjoyed on its own or as a shot, but you can also add Gelée to a cheese plate, a yogurt parfait, or even with oysters. I only tried each flavor as is, but there are definitely a lot more possibilities to explore.
I will say, however, that I’m not exactly sold on the product based on the health and wellness descriptors. All gelatin is made from collagen, which you’ll get regardless of what brand you buy.
The other ingredients like apple cider vinegar and Celtic sea salt may have some benefits from a micronutrient perspective, but there’s not enough of them in a bag of gelatin to make a tangible impact on your overall health. In my mind, it strikes a similar chord as the rise of trendy sodas like Poppi (and consumers are now realizing that those health claims are at least a little overstated).
Is yassified gelatin a health food? I'm not convinced. But is it delicious? Certainly. So far, Gelée is offering three different flavors: Guava Nectar, Passion, and Piña Coco. I made them all at home and particularly enjoyed Passion, but I think they’d all work well in a jello shot (with rum, probably). If you want to elevate your gelatin game, Gelée is definitely worth a try.
